INEI will work in the generation and dissemination of statistics about the climate change

Within the framework of the activities of the Inter-institutional Committee on Environmental Accounts and Statistics and the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) gathered with representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ministry of Production, Ministry of Energy and Mines, Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, National Service of Potable Water and Sewerage Service of Lima (SEDAPAL), National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (SENAMHI), Peruvian Institute of the Sea (IMARPE), the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI), Institute of Geophysics of Peru (IGP), National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), Nacional Superintendence of Sanitation Service (SUNASS), National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SENARP), Evaluation and Environmental Monitoring Organization (OEFA), the Program of Rural Agricultural Productive Development among other entities; in order to organize the implementation of actions of the sub-working group to generate indicators about climate change.
During the meeting there were planned the tasks that will allow to homogenize, organize and disseminate the statistics about climate change, so the decision-makers have useful tools that would support them in the policy-making for prevention and mitigation of the effects of the climate change. It is worth to mention that among the activities to be performed include the implementation of a statistical inventory generated by the different entities.
During the event, the Chief of the INEI, Mr. Dante Carhuavilca Bonett, pointed out that the information generated by the State must reach everybody, noting that it adds value if the complete and quality information, is reached in a timely manner.
It should be pointed out that, the committee work plan is focused in activities referred to the inter-institutional coordination, identification of environmental information, compilation, and information generation and building capabilities. In addition, it should be remembered that the country has a data base account about the value of the forest, value of the water and other expenses that were generated in the environmental protection.
Availability of statistics and indicators of climate change
It should be noted that at present the information demand about the climate change is greater than the offer, particularly in the environmental aspects. This is why the development of methodologies in other relevant aspects of climate change has been boosted such as the evidence, impact and occurrence of disasters.
Statistics related to the environment are included within the global framework of monitoring indicators of the 2030 Agenda for the SDGs
During the event, it outstood that Peru just as other countries has committed of advancing in the compliance with the 2030 Agenda and the goals and indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In this context, the INEI has been developing a base line of the indicators of the SDG in order to perform a monitoring of the 2030 Agenda. The INEI and other sectors prepared 125 out of the 248 indicators.
