The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) announced that in 2020, the homicide rate in the country was 5.8 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, an amount lower than that reported in 2019, which reached 7.4 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the information published in the document "Homicides in Peru, counting them one by one 2019 and 2020, prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics, in his capacity as president of the Inter-institutional Statistical Committee for the Criminality (CEI) composed by representatives of the Judiciary, Public Ministry, Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, National Penitentiary Institute and the National Police of Peru.

Of the total number of homicide victims that occurred in 2020, 80.9% were men and 19.1% women. By age groups, 64.0% of the homicide victims were between 15 and 44 years old, of which 34.2% belong to the range of 15 to 29 years and 29.8% between 30 and 44 years old. Meanwhile, 22.4% were between 45 and 64 years old, 8.4% were 65 and over, and 5.2% were under 15 years of age.

INEI also specified that, in the last ten years, 21,583 intentional deaths have been registered in Peru, of which 1,903 violent deaths associated with intentional criminal acts were registered in 2020.

Madre de Dios registers the highest homicide rate
At the regional level, in 2020, Madre de Dios registered the highest homicide rate with 13.8 per 100,000 citizens, followed by the Constitutional Province of Callao (12.0), Tumbes (10.7), Lima (8.1), Junín (7.8), Pasco (7.7), Huánuco (7.2) and Ucayali (7.0). While the regions with the lowest homicide rates were Loreto (2.5), San Martín and Áncash (3.9 each), Cajamarca (4.3), Piura (4.6), La Libertad and Lambayeque (4 .7 each).

15 Districts of Metropolitan Lima concentrate the highest number of homicides
In 2020, of the 30 districts in the country with the highest number of violent deaths associated with intentional criminal acts, fifteen districts belong to Metropolitan Lima: Comas (59), Lima Cercado (52), San Juan de Lurigancho (41), San Martín de Porres (37), Puente Piedra (28), El Agustino and Los Olivos (24 cases each), Carabayllo and La Victoria (23 each), Chorrillos and Villa El Salvador (19 each), Ate and San Juan de Miraflores (18 each); Independencia and Villa María del Triunfo (15 each). Three belong to the Constitutional Province of Callao, leading the district of Callao (80), followed by Ventanilla (27) and Bellavista (15). The province of Puno with two districts Juliaca (23) and Puno (13); Piura province with Piura (19) and Sullana (13), the province of Ica with Pisco (14), Junín with Tambo (14);

64.8% of homicides were with a firearm
In 2020, 64.8% of homicides were perpetrated with a firearm, 13.7% with a knife, 11.5% using a blunt object, and 2.7% with harmful substances.

29.5% of homicides occurred on public roads
According to the place where the homicides happened in the year 2020, 29.5% were on public roads, 17.2% in the victim's home, 12.1% in rivers, seas, cliffs, ditch, 11, 1% in an open field or desolate place, 8.4% in the house shared by the victim and alleged perpetrator, and 21.7% in another place.

31.2% of homicides were caused by common crime
In the year 2020, almost the third part of the homicides were caused by common criminals, 22.6% for revenge, 15.0% of the victims were due to traumatic blows, 13.2% due to jealousy, 8.1% family violence, 7.3% for organized crime, 5.6% for alleged infidelity of the couple, 5.6% to facilitate or hide another offense or crime, 3.4% for sexual abuse and 13 .7% for other causes.
