3.3 Million Peruvians Who Left The Country Have Not Returned

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) announced that in the period 1990-2020, Peruvians who left the country and have not returned totaled 3 million 309 thousand 635 people, equivalent to 10.1% of the total population projected to 2020. In the publication "Peru: Statistics on the International Emigration of Peruvians and Immigration of Foreigners", it is detailed that, of the total number of Peruvians who left abroad, 51.9% are women and 48.1% mens.
It should be noted that the preparation of this publication had as a source of information the administrative records from the National Superintendence of Migration and other institutions, with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
 
Most Peruvians who left the country and did not return were between 20 and 39 years old
According to age groups of the Peruvian population that emigrated to other countries, 45.8% were between 20 and 39 years old, 10.6% between 20 and 24 years old, 11.8% between 25 and 29 years old, 12 .1% were between 30 and 34 years old and 11.2% were in the group between 35 and 39 years old.
It is important to mention that the emigrant population from 0 to 14 years of age represents 11.8% of the total, and those from 65 to over 5.6%, both groups add up to 17.4% of the Peruvian emigrant population. total.
 
64 out of every 100 Peruvians who left the country were single
During the period 1990-2020 and according to the marital status of the population aged 14 and over who left the country, 63.6% were single, 18.4% married, 0.6% divorced and 0. 5% widowers: while 17.0% did not register their marital status.
When analyzing the marital status according to sex of the Peruvians who left the country, of the single people, 50.2% are women and 49.8% are men, of the total number of married people, 57.7% represent women and 42.3% men, in the group of widowers, the female sex reached 87.1% and 12.9% men. Meanwhile, 66.6% of divorcees are women and 33.4% men.
 
More than 60% of Peruvians who left the country reside in America
As of 2021 and according to the continent of residence, it can be seen that 64.8% of our compatriots who emigrated to other countries have a country in the American continent as their residence, of which 32.7% live in North America , 31.1% in South America and 1.0% in Central America. Meanwhile, 30.5% in Europe, 4.1% in Asia and 0.7% of Peruvians residing abroad would be in Oceania or in an African country.
 
Most Peruvian emigrants live in the United States of America
According to the country of residence of the Peruvians who left our country and have not returned,it is observed that most of them reside, mainly, in the United States of America with 30.2%, followed by Spain with 15.4%, Argentina with 13.6%, Chile with 11.8%, Italy 10.2 %, Japan 3.7%, Canada 1.9%, countries that concentrate 86.8% of Peruvian emigrants; while 13.2% live in other countries.
 
Buenos Aires is the city that hosts the majority of Peruvian emigrants
According to the city of residence, 10.0% of Peruvians abroad live in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 9.5% Santiago de Chile and 7.2% in Madrid-Spain. Meanwhile, 4.5% in New Jersey, 4.1% New York, and 3.8% Miami, cities belonging to the United States of America; 3.9% in Barcelona-Spain, 3.6% Milan-Italy; and 3.0% in the city of Los Angeles, 1.8% Virginia and San Francisco, each. It is important to mention that these cities concentrate 53.3% of the total number of Peruvians residing abroad.
 
20.7% of Peruvians who emigrated from the country were students
During the period 1990-2020 and according to the category of education, of the total number of Peruvians aged 14 and over who left the country, 20.7% said they were students, 11.4% office workers, 9.4% housewives, 8.4% professionals, scientists and intellectuals, 8.1% service workers, trade and market vendors, 4.7% mid-level professional technicians and 2.0% officials and operators, craftsmen of mechanical arts and others”, between the occupations.
 
16.9% of professional Peruvian emigrants are teachers
Of the total professional Peruvians who emigrated to other countries, 16.9% are teachers, 14.1% engineers, 9.8% business administrators, 7.5% nurses and 6.0% accountants, which reach 54 .3% of Peruvian professionals who left the country.
 
In the period 2000-2021, more than 390 thousand Peruvians returned to the country
According to the information provided by the National Superintendence of Migration, in the period 2000-2021 a total of 394 thousand 683 returned to the country and have not left again. It should be noted that, of the total number of Peruvians who returned to the country in the aforementioned period, 68.6% left Peru between 2006 and 2020. The majority of people who returned left the country in 2007 (24 thousand 528 ) and 2019 (22,226), figures that represent 6.2% and 5.6% of the total number of returnees, respectively.
 
69.3% of the population of returning Peruvians aged 14 years and over, stated that they were single, 19.0%married, while 1.7% said they were widowed or divorced. 10.0% of the total did not register their marital status when entering the country.
 
More women than men returned to the country
In the estimated period (2000 - 2021) of the total number of Peruvians who returned to the country, 52.1% were women (205,667) and 47.9% were men (189,016). According to five-year age groups, 12.4% of returning Peruvians were between 25 and 29 years old and 11.9% between 30 and 34 years old. Likewise, it can be seen that 67.1% of them were between 15 and 49 years of age and 8.4% were over 64 years of age. 8.5% were under 15 years of age.
 
22.8% of Peruvians returning to the country were students
Of the total number of Peruvians aged 14 years and over who returned to the country between 2000-2021, 22.8% were students, 14.0% housewives, 12.9% office employees, 9.6% workers. of services, trade and market vendors, 9.0% professionals, scientists and intellectuals, 6.2% mid-level professional technicians and 25.2% had another occupation.
 
More than 1 million 300 thousand foreigners reside in Peru
According to the information provided by the National Superintendence of Migration, the number of foreigners who would be residing in the country until August 2021 amounts to 1 million 347 thousand 893 foreigners, being the highest percentages of entry of foreigners residing in the years 2018 and 2021. By sex, of the total number of resident foreigners, 54.2% are men and 45.8% women.
 
More than 1 million 170 thousand foreigners residing in Peru are Venezuelans
According to nationality, 86.8% of foreigners residing in our country are Venezuelans (1 million 170 thousand 621), followed by Colombians with 3.3% (44 thousand 250), Ecuadorians 1.1% ( 14,156), Americans 1.0% (13,444), Spanish 1.0% (13,393), Argentines 0.8% (11,181), Chileans 0.7% (10,096), Brazilians 0.7% (9 thousand 501), Chinese 0.7% (9 thousand 41), Bolivians 0.6% (7 thousand 715), Mexicans 0.4% (5 thousand 130), while Italians represent the 0.3% (3 thousand 664), among the most outstanding.
 
Remittances reached US$ 3,592 million in 2021
In 2021, remittances entered Peru reached US$3,592 million, this amount shows a growing recovery of 22.2% compared to the previous year, which due to the effects of the pandemic in 2020, fell by -11.6%; it also grows 8% compared to 2019. Remittances represent 1.6% of the Peruvian GDP.
 
In the year 2021, remittances from countries from the United States, Chile and Spain accounted for 68.5% of total remittances. The United States concentrated 42.6% of remittances, followed by Chile 15.3% and Spain 10.6%, among others.
 
Regarding the destination of the spending of remittances, 78.4% of the total is allocated to family consumption expenses, which include everything to cover basic needs, such as food, health and payments for basic services (electricity, water, drainage, etc.). In second place, of importance is education (10.6%), followed by housing (7.4%), savings (1.4%), and other items (2.3%)
