Consumer Prices In Metropolitan Lima Rose 0.38% In May 2022

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported that, in the month of May of this year, the Consumer Price Index of Metropolitan Lima increased 0.38%, with an accumulated variation to the fifth month of the year of 3.21 % and that of the last twelve months (June 2021 – May 2022) reached 8.09%.
 
In the technical report Variation of the Price Indicators of the Economy it is explained that the monthly result was mainly influenced by the rise in prices observed in the consumer divisions: Transportation (1.72%) due to the increase in the price of passage by bus, minibus and combi, gasoline and diesel oil; Restaurants and Hotels (1.10%) due to the increase in the price of food and beverage services in restaurants such as menu, breakfast, grilled chicken, chifa dishes, hot drinks and soft drinks; Miscellaneous Goods and Services (0.86%) for articles for personal hygiene and services for personal care; and Recreation and Culture (0.96%) due to the increase in newspapers and periodicals, stationery and office supplies, and pet food. To a lesser extent, the Health divisions reported rising prices (0.56%); Furniture, Household Items and Ordinary Home Maintenance (0.36%), Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics (0.32%); Clothing and Footwear (0.24%); Communications (0.18%) and Education (0.04%).
 
On the contrary, the prices of the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages division decreased (-0.70%) due to the lower prices observed in Fresh vegetables and legumes such as green peas, celery, Chinese onion, potato and tomato; sugar; eviscerated chicken and its cuts, eviscerated hen; fruits such as avocado, tangerine, papaya, orange and lemon; and chicken eggs.
 
The increase in Transportation is explained by increases in the prices of fuels and lubricants for personnel transportation equipment (4.9%) such as gasohol (6.1%), diesel oil (3.7%) and motor oil (0.9%); likewise, passenger transport by road (1.8%) such as bus and minibus passage (3.8%) and combi (3.5%); also passenger transport by air (0.5%) such such as international airfare (1.8%) and spare parts and accessories for personnel transportation equipment (0.4%) such as new tires (1.1%). On the other hand, the prices of vehicular liquefied petroleum gas (-5.2%), interprovincial bus fares (-3.8%) and national air fares (-3.1%) decreased.
 
In the Restaurants and Hotels division, the prices of food service in restaurants and similar places increased (1.2%) such as chifa dishes (1.7%), pizzas (1.4%), menu in restaurants (1.4% ), grilled chicken (1.2%), chicken broth (1.1%), Creole dishes (1.1%), tamales (1.1%), sandwiches (1.0%), pork (1.0%) and marine dishes (0.9%); likewise, the beverage service in restaurants and similar places (0.8%) where the prices of natural soft drinks (1.2%), hot drinks (1.0%) and soft drinks (0.8%) rose. , mineral and table water (0.8%).

On the contrary, the prices of coffee, tea and cocoa (1.6%) rose, as did instant coffee (2.2%), chocolate product (2.0%) and roasted ground coffee (1.7%); fish and shellfish (1.6%) such as bonito (7.2%), hake (9.0%), mullet (4.0%), tilapia (1.0%) and horse mackerel (0.5% ); various food products (1.5%) such as diced food (17.5%) and soy sauce (5.4%); bread and cereals (0.8%) such as toast (7.1%), dipped biscuits (3.5%), sweet pastries (3.4%), breads such as wholemeal (2.1%), French (1 .1%), dry long-paste noodles (1.3%) and packaged rice (1.2%); likewise, mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices (0.7%) such as, packaged soft drinks (1.2%), mineral water without gas (0.9%), table water without gas (0, 7%) and soft drink (0.6%); and oils and fats (0.1%) such as packaged margarine (1.7%) and olive oil (1.1%).

In the Recreation and Culture divisionprices were increased newspapers and periodicals (16.2%), recreation and sports services (1.9%) such as individual lessons (2.8%); pets and related products (1.4%) such as pet food (1.4%) and pet accessories (1.3%); paper and office supplies and drawing materials (0.9%) such as paper, cardboard, envelopes (1.6%) and various school supplies (1.1%); equipment for the reception, recording and reproduction of sounds and images (0.5%) such as televisions (0.6%) and sound equipment (0.5%). Meanwhile, the prices of gardens, plants and flowers (-0.9%) such as natural flowers and plants (-0.9%) fell; and veterinary and other services for pets (-0.6%) such as bathing and haircut services (-1.4%).

In Miscellaneous Goods and Services, the prices of articles and products forpersonal care (1.1%) such as toilet paper (2.8%), deodorants (1.8%), toothpastes (1.6%), toilet soap (1.5%),
facial creams (0.9%), conditioners (0.9%), sanitary towels (0.9%), razors (0.8%) and shampoo (0.8%). Similarly, hairdressing salons and personal care establishments (0.8%) such as hair dyeing (1.0%), aesthetic care of hands and feet (0.9%), and women's haircuts and male (0.8%); and jewelry, wall clocks and wrist watches (0.5%) such as gold jewelry (0.8%).

Products with higher price variation
In the month of May 2022, of the 586 products that make up the basketfamily, 405 recorded price increases, 109 fell and the other 72 maintained their prices. The products with the highest price increase were blueberries (29.7%), spinach (21.7%), diced foods (17.5%), newspapers or periodicals (16.2%), cucumber (11.3% ), hake (9.0%), white grape (8.9%) and Israeli apple (7.8%). While, the products with falling prices were green peas (-24.1%), celery (-11.9%), residential natural gas (-10.6%), sea bass (-10.4%), Chinese onion (-10.3%), strong avocado (-8.9%), tangerine (-8.2%) and papaya (-7.9%).

Products with the highest incidence
The variation in prices during the month of analysis was mainly influenced by the increase in the price of bus and minibus tickets, combi tickets and gasoline, as well as electricity rates and restaurant menus, which together contributed with 0.326 percentage points to the result of the month; mitigated in part by the decrease in prices of food products such as green peas, chicken eggs, white potatoes, eviscerated chicken and brown sugar.

Consumer prices without food and energy increased 0.60%
During the month of May 2022, the variation of the Consumer Price Index of Metropolitan Lima, without considering food and energy (core inflation) increased by 0.60%.

Consumer Price Index at the National Level increased 0.36%
In the fifth month of the year, consumer prices nationwide rose 0.36% due to price increases in eleven of the twelve consumer divisions: Transportation (1.35%), Restaurants and hotels (1.12%) , Goods and
 
various services (0.92%), recreation and culture (0.90%), furniture, household items (0.57%), health (0.56%), clothing and footwear (0.51% ), Alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.31%), Communications (0.18%). Housing, water, electricity and gas (0.12%) and Education (0.06%). However, they fell in the prices of Food and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.71%).
 
Variation of prices by cities
In the month of May 2022, twenty-one of the twenty-six cities where the Consumer Price Index is calculated registered price increases. The highest variations were observed in the cities of Arequipa (1.04%), Chachapoyas (0.74%), Cerro de Pasco (0.64%) and Cusco (0.61%). While the cities that reported price reductions were Huancavelica (-1.15%), Chiclayo (-0.27%), Piura (-0.25%), Chimbote (-0.03%) and Pucallpa (- 0.01%).
 
Wholesale prices nationwide increased 1.69%
During the month of analysis, the Wholesale Price Index grew 1.69%, due to the rise in prices of national products; manufactured (diesel oil, gasohol, industrial oil, electro-welded pipes, construction rods, steel profiles, paints: oil and latex, cotton fiber yarn, chicken meat, industrial wheat flour, PVC pipes, nails, cement and refined soybean oil); agricultural (carrots, mangoes, onions, hard yellow corn, grapes, coffee beans and cassava); and fishing (parrot, bonito, smooth, cachema, cabrilla, horse mackerel and mackerel); however, the prices of livestock goods (live chicken, cattle: pigs and cattle, live chicken and eggs) fell. Prices of Machinery and Equipment in Metropolitan Lima rose by 2.16%
In May 2022, the Metropolitan Lima Machinery and Equipment Price Index increased 2.16%; explained by the rise in the prices of capital goods of national origin, mainly in machinery and equipment for agriculture: drinkers, picks and lampas; in other machinery and equipment: carts, stretchers and medical treatment chairs; machinery and equipment for industry: metal tanks and propane gas cylinders; and machinery and equipment for transportation: bodies, brakes and springs for automotive vehicles. Similarly, the prices of capital goods of imported origin rose, basically machinery and equipment for industry: loaders, front-end bulldozers, computers, forklifts, laundry machines and liquid pumps, and machinery and equipment for transport:
 
Construction material prices increased 0.75%
Finally, the INEI reported that, in the month of May of this year, the Price Index for Construction Materials in Metropolitan Lima rose by 0.75%, mainly explained by the rise in two groups: metallic (rebar construction, wire rod and corrugated galvanized iron) and majolica and mosaics (wall and floor coverings). Also, concrete structures (flat and corrugated fiber plates) were raised; flat glasses; aggregates (concrete); wood (screw and capirona); and electrical supplies (cables for power and wires and cables for telephone installations). On the other hand, the prices of bricks (tambourine, king kong and roofing) fell; plastic pipes and accessories (PVC tanks and accessories for water and drainage) and the group of binders.
