Households with older adult population increased at national level

During the third quarter of 2025, 44.6% of the households of the country have a person of 60 years old and older and registered a growth of 2.6 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the last year (42.0%); this was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).


The technical report Situation of Older Adult Population, prepared with the result of the National Household Survey (ENAHO) stated that, in the rural area, the proportion of households with persons of 60 years old and older was of 48.4% and registered a growth of 3.1 percentage points, compared to the third quarter of 2024 (45.3%). In the rest urban area the proportion of households with persons of 60 years old and older was of 41.1% and in Lima Metropolitan area, 47.4% of the households have at least one member of this age group, observing increases of 2.7 and 2.3 percentage points, respectively.


46.5% of households headed by older adults are nuclear type
From the total of households headed by older adults, 46.5% are nuclear type or consist in a couple with or without children. Likewise, 26.9% were single person households, composed only by the older adult; 21.0% were considered extended households, in which to the nuclear family are added other relatives.


In addition, 4.5% corresponded to coreless households, composed by a chief with neither a spouse nor a dependent child, that lives with other persons with which they can or can not have family relationship and 1.1% are composed households, where in addition to the relatives, there are living persons with non-kin with the chief of the household.


41.4% of the older adult population with some chronic health problem sought medical attention
At national level, 41.4% of the population of 60 years old and older with some chronic health problem sought medical attention, during the third quarter of 2025. This requirement was higher in the population of the res turban area with 44.2% and in Lima Metropolitan area with 40.1%; meanwhile that in the rural area reached the 38.1%.


Population of 60 years old and older went mainly to establishments of the Ministry of Health
During the quarter under analysis, 41.8% of the population of 60 years old and older with some health problem sought medical attention in an establishment. In that regard, 15.5% sought medical attention in establishments of the Ministry of Health (MINSA) and 10.3% sought medical attention in pharmacy or apothecary, 8.8% sought attention in establishments of the Social Health Insurance (EsSalud), 5.3% sought medical attention in private practice, among others.


In Lima Metropolitan area, the place or establishment that receive greater visitors were MINSA establishments (13.8%), followed by EsSalud (9.5%), pharmacies or apothecaries (9.1%), mainly. In the rest urban area, this population segment sought medical attention in greater proportion in pharmacies or apothecaries (12.9%); meanwhile, in the rural area outstood MINSA establishments (23.7%) and in the pharmacies or apothecaries (7.5%), among the main ones.


95.5% of the older adult population of 60 years old and older has health insurance
During the third quarter of 2025, 95.5% of the older adult population of 60 years old and older had health insurance (public or private), higher proportion in 2.6 percentage points, compared to the same quarter of the last year (92.9%).


By residence area, 97.4% of the population of Lima Metropolitan area had this service which meant an increase of 3.7 percentage points compared to the same quarter of 2024 (93.7%). At the same time, 95.4% of the rural area and 94.0% of the urban ret area had this service, with increases of 2.3 and 1.9 percentage points, respectively.


According to type of health insurance, 55.9% of the older adult population was affiliated just to the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS) and 35.0% accessed just to EsSalud. Registering in the first case a growth of 5.2 percentage points, and in the second term, a decrease of 1.8 percentage points.
