INEI: 28 out of 100 persons of Venezuelan nationality that live in Peru are poor

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that, according to the results of the National Household Survey targeted to the 2024 Venezuelan Population (ENAHOPV), 28.1% of the Venezuelan population that lives in Peru is poor, it means, their expenses are insufficient to cover the cost of the Basic Basket of Consumption (foods and non- food).
The survey that had the support of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Bank, was carried out between the months of August and November of 2024 in the cities of Arequipa, Chiclayo, Chimbote, Ica, Lima Metropolitan area and the Constitutional Province of Callao, Piura, Trujillo and Tumbes, with the aim of knowing the living and poverty conditions of the Venezuelan population that lives in the country.
Iti s worth to mention that this is the third statistical study about the Venezuelan population, that started in the year 2018 with the First Survey Targeted to the Venezuelan Population living in Peru (ENPOVE 2018) and continued in the year 2022, with the Second Survey Targeted to the Venezuelan Population (II ENPOVE 2022).
The presentation of the results was in charge of the chief of the INEI, Gaspar Morán Flores, who outstood the support of ACNUR and the World Bank for the development of this research; as well as of the Venezuelan houses for the information provided.
“This is the first report about the monetary poverty in the Venezuelan population living in Peru caried out by the INEI. Now we are working together (INEI, World Bank and UNHCR) a second report referred to the living conditions of this population that we expected to present the next January”, announced.
On the other hand, Eliana Rubiano, economist of the World Bank, outstood that Peru is the first country of Latin America in measuring the monetary poverty of the Venezuelan population with international standards. “This research will allow to demystify perceptions, to perform an effective focalization; as well to execute a comprehensive monitoring of the Venezuelan population that will contribute to a better decision making for this population group”, he stated.
The event also has the participation of Laura Almirall, representative of UNHCR in Peru; Matthew Bird, professor and researcher of the Pacific University; Javier Herrera, independent researcher; and Viviana Cruzado, director of the Organismo de Focalización e Información Social (OFIS).
33.7% of the Venezuelan population is in situation of vulnerability
33.7% of the Venezuelan population is in situation of vulnerability, it means, that they are in risk of poverty before any unfavorable change of their economic conditions (adverse shocks such as the lost of employment, loss of business, serious illness, among others).
Venezuelan population that lives in the country expends 823 Soles per month
According to the information obtained in the eight cities where the survey was carried out, expenditure per person of the Venezuelan population that lives in our country totalized 823 Soles, and inferior figure by 16.9% (167 soles) compared with the expend by person of the Peruvian population.
Average monthly income of the Venezuelan population in Peru was of 956 Soles
During the year 2024, average monthly real per capita income of the Venezuelan population in the cities under study was of 956 Soles. In Lima Metropolitan area and the Constitutional Province of Callao was of 930 soles, and in the rest of cities totalized 1,088 Soles.
Greater proportion of Venezuelan poor population works in Services sector
During 2024, 39.5% of the Venezuelan population that lives in Peru in poverty condition works in in Services activities, 27.3% in Comercio, 14.5% in Transportation and Communications, 12.8%, in Manufacturing, 5.5% in Construction and 0.4% in Agriculture, Fishing and Mining.
In the case of the Venezuelan population in condition of vulnerability, was observed that 44.0% works in Services and 22.9% in Commerce.
96 out of 100 poor persons of Venezuelan nationality are informal
According to the condition of informality, 95.9% of the population of Venezuelan nationality in condition of poverty has an informal employment.
Poor population that lives in houses with members of vulnerable groups
The survey revealed that 93.6% of the Venezuelan population in poverty condition, lives in houses with at least an underage person of 14 years old.
In addition, showed that, 12.9% of the Venezuelan population in poverty condition, lives in houses where one of the members have some disability; and that 22.3% of the population lives in single parent households headed by women.
Meanwhile, 32.3% of the Venezuelan population in poverty condition, lives in overcrowded situation.
Sociodemographic characteristics of the Venezuelan population that lives in the country
According to the ENAHOPV results, 52.0% of the Venezuelan population that lives in the country are women and 48.0% are men.
According to age groups, the greater concentration was registered in the population of 18 to 44 years old with 53.4%, followed by the underage population of 11 years old with 24.5%. The older adults of 60 years old reached 3.1%, meanwhile that those of 12 to 17 years old and that of 45 to 59 years old concentrated together 19.0%.
On the other hand, 95.9% of the Venezuelan households lives in rented dwellings. Regarding to basic services, was observed that 99.4% had access to water through public network, whether inside or outside of the house, and 99.4% had access to the sewerage to the public network. Meanwhile, 74.1% accessed to the Internet.
67.4% of the Venezuelan population that works are 25 to 44 years old
Regarding to the labour situation of the Venezuelan population living in Peru, was reported that 95.8% works, from which 67.4% are between 25 and 44 years old, 16.4% are 45 years old or older, and 16.2% are between 14 to 24 years old. It is worth to mention that, according to the occupation category, 72.1% are depending and 273% independent employees.
44 out of 100 houses send remittances to their family members that live in Venezuela
Regarding the send of remittances, was reported that 43.8% of Venezuelan households send remittances to their family members living in Venezuela, which monthly average was of 199 Soles.
Venezuelan population living in Peru with some type of migratory permit grows
ENAHOPV results revealed that 61.0% of the Venezuelan population has in force residence, higher result to the registered in the year 2022 (33.7%), and those with in force temporary permit reached 20.8%. It is worth to mention that the Venezuelan population without migratory permit reduced from 35.7% in 2022 to 13.9% in 2024.
