INEI: Peru registered 154 cases of femicide in 2024

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the year 2024 were registered 154 cases of femicide in the country, which is equivalent to a rate of 1 femicide for each 100 thousand women. It is worth to mention that, between 2015 and 2024, were accounted 1,345 femicides in Peru.


The publication “Peru: Femicide and Violence against Women 2025-2024”, prepared with information of the National Police of Peru (PNP), the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP) and the Public Ministry, indicates that in 2024 were reported, in average per week, three femicide and five cases of femicide attempt.


Lima Metropolitan area registered the greater number of femicide
In 2024, Lima Metropolitan area was the city with more cases reported at national level (36), followed by Cusco (15), Junín (12), Cajamarca (11), Arequipa (9), Huánuco and Piura (7 each one), and Ancash, Ica and Puno (6 each one), among others.


A same trend was observed in the period 2015-2024: Lima Metropolitan area accumulated 319 cases, followed by Cusco and Arequipa (92 each one), Junín (81), Huánuco (68), Puno (63), and Lima Region and La Libertad (60 each one), among others.


Madre de Dios registered the greater rate of femicide
At national level, Madre de Dios registered the greater femicide rate in 2024, with almost 6 victims for each 100 thousand women. Followed by Cusco (2.2), Huánuco (1.9), Huancavelica (1.8), Junín (1.7), Apurímac (1.4) and Ica and Arequipa (1.1 each one). Likewise, Amazonas, Ancash, Puno, Lima Region and Ucayali registered a rate of 1.0, higher-than-national average figures (0,9).


Lima Metropolitan area: San Juan de Lurigancho registered more cases at district level
Of the 319 femicide cases registered in Lima Metropolitan are between 2015 and 2024, the districts with greater number were: San Juan de Lurigancho (28), San Martín de Porres (24), Comas (21), Villa María del Triunfo, Ate and San Juan de Miraflores (20 each one).


Followed by Villa El Salvador (17), Chorrillos (15), Los Olivos and Carabayllo (14 each one), La Victoria (13), El Agustino (12), Independencia (11), Puente Piedra and Pachacamac (10 each one).


In the Constitutional Province of Callao were registered 28 femicides between 2025 and 2024: 13 in district of Callao, in Ventanilla (9), Bellavista (3), in Carmen de La Legua Reynoso (2) and in Mi Perú (1).


70.1% of the victims are under 40 years old
In 2024, 70.1% of women victims of femicide are less than 40 years old: 38.3% are between 18 to 29 years old; 24.7%, between 30 to 39 years old; and 7.1% are under 18 years old. In addition, 19.5% are between 40 to 49 years; 5.8%, are between 50 to 59 years old; and 4.5%, 60 years old and older.


The majority of femicide cases were committed with knife
In 2024, 27.3% of the femicides were committed with knife; 26.6% through strangulation, choking or suffocation; 9.1% with firearm; 9.1% with a hard blunt object; 4.5% through poisoning or toxic substances; 0.6% by precipitation or fall and 8.4% through other media. In 14.3% of the cases did not precise the modality.


Jealousy is the main caused identified
During the period under study, jealousy is the main cause of femicide (37.0%), followed by family violence (17.5%), refusal of the victim to resume or continue the relation (12.9% together) and sexual abuse (3.3%), among others.


Regarding the place of occurrence, 53.9% of the cases happened in the victim’s house and the 13.0%, in a lonely place or open field. Regarding the relation with the aggressor, 73.4% of the victims had a sentimental relation: 39.0% was a partner or live-in partner; 16.9% ex-partner or ex-live-in partner; 7.8% couples in love; 4.5% husband; 4.5% ex-couple in love; and 0.7% ex-husband.


Violence against woman
According to the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) of the first semester of 2025, 50% of women of 15 to 49 years old suffered violence once by violence from their husbands or their companion.


Likewise, 31.0% of women experienced violence by their partner or husband in the last 12 months.
