44.6% of the households in the country have at least one person of 60 years old and older

According to the technical report of the Older Adult Population, elaborated by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), during the second quarter of 2025, 44.6% of the households in the country have at least one person of 60 years old and older or older adult population, a higher figure in 2.5 percentage points to the registered in the same quarter of the last year (42.1%).
By residence area, in Lima Metropolitan area, 47.8% of the households have at least one older adult person, superior proportion in 3.3 percentage points compared to the second quarter of 2024 (44.5%). In the rest urban area increased by 3.0 percentage points compared to the second quarter of 2024, by going from 38.4% to 41.4%; meanwhile, the rural area (46.8%) did not show variation, compared to the same quarter of the last year.
24.6% of the households that have an older adult person as chief of the household are one person household
From the total of households that have as chief of household an older adult person, 49.0% corresponded to households of nuclear type, formed by a couple, with or without children. Followed by 24.6% that corresponded to one person household, only composed by an older adult.
Likewise, 20.5% were extended households, in which to the core family were added other relatives, 5.3% household with no core, formed by a chief with neither spouse nor children that lives together with other persons with they can or cannot have family relationship and 0.6% were composed households, where besides the relatives, are living persons with no family ties with the household chief.
94.3% of the older adult population of 60 years old and older has some type of health insurance
During the second quarter of 2025, 94.3% of the older adult population of 60 years old and older has some type of health insurance, whether public or private, increasing in 1.0 percentage point, compared to the same quarter of the year 2024 (93.3%).
By residence area, 53.1% of the older adult population was affiliated to the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS); meanwhile that 35.4% accessed to the EsSalud. Compared to the same quarter of 2024, the coverage of EsSalud increased in 0.4 percentage point and the affiliation to the SIS in 0.3 percentage point.
80.2% of the older adult population registered some chronic health problem
During the second quarter of 2025, 80.2% of the population of 60 years old and older registered some chronic health. According to residence area, the greater proportion was registered in the rest urban area (81.9%), followed by Lima Metropolitan area (78.9%) and in the rural area (78.8%).
39.7% of the older adult population with some chronic health problem sought medical attention
From April to June of 2025, 39.7% of the older adult population with some chronic health sought medical attention, percentage that increased in 2.8 percentage points, compared to the same quarter of the year 2024 (36.9%).
The greater percentage growths were registered in the res turban area by going from 36.2% to 40.1% (3.9 percentage points), followed by Lima Metropolitan area by going from 38.5% to 41,9% (3.4 percentage points); meanwhile that in the rural area (35.3%) were not registered significative changes.
90.5% that have an older adult person as chief of the household has some member that has a cellphone
From the households that have and older adult person as chief of the household, 90.5% have some member that has a cellphone. In the case of the urban area, reached 93.7%, and in the rural area, reached 78.9%. The difference that there is between both areas was of percentage points.
