Economy of 16 departments showed positive behaviors during the second quarter of 2025

During the second quarter of 2025, the productive activity of 16 departments registered a positive behavior, compared to the same quarter of 2024. This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the Technical Report Indicator of the Departmental Productive Activity; stating that 8 regions registered greater incidence, outstanding Apurimac (27.3%) based in the dynamism of the mining and construction activities; followed by Tacna (13.8%), Junín (11.8%), Pasco (11.3%), Ayacucho (9.8%), Piura (6.0%), Cajamarca (5.8%) and Lima (2,8%), which together contributed with the 63.5% of the total production.


Nevertheless, eight departments showed a low productive activity, unfavourable contributing, Ancash (-7.9%) before the reduction of the mining subsector and Cusco (-4.9%) by the hydrocarbons subsector; in addition, Tumbes (-10.8%) obtained the most negative rate, due to the lower contribution of the construction and agribusiness sector.


According to geographic areas, the production of the Oriental (4.8%), South (2.5%), Center (2.5%) and North (1,9%) areas, increased.


Economy of Apurimac grew by 27.3% driven by the mining activity
During the second quarter of 2025, the productive activity of Apurímac increased by 27.3% compared to the same quarter of 2024, registering four quarters of continuous growth, influenced by the dynamism of the mining activity due to the greater extraction of copper in the Mine Las Bambas due to a better ore milled grade in their quarries of Chalcobamba and Ferrobamba, positioned as the second producer of copper at national level. The Construction sector was determined by the greater investment in the three levels of government.


The production of Tacna expanded by 13.8% determined by the Agribusiness sector
During the months of April, May and June of 2025, the economy of Tacna increased by 13.8%, compared to the same quarter of the last year, registering two continuous periods of positive results, favoured by the Agribusiness sector due to the high production of its main crop, the olive that is destined to the foreign market and agroindustry; followed by orange, watermelon and starchy maize. Regarding the livestock products, it outstood the poultry, swine and alpaca. The growth of the Construction sector was based in the greater investment of the Regional Government and Local Government. In the Transportation sector it increased the transport services of cargo by road and passenger land transportation; in addition, it contributed the air movement of passengers before the demand of flights during the long holiday on the occasion of the Labour Day.


Mining activity influenced in the productive performance of Junin by 11.8%
The production of Junín increased by 11.8% during the second quarter of 2025, compared to the same quarter of 2024, keeping a growing trend by four consecutive periods. This behavior was driven by the mining activity before the greater extraction of copper and molybdenum in the Mine Chinalco Perú; in addition, of zinc, silver and lead in the mining companies Volcan and Argentum.
The dynamism of the Construction sector was due to the greater private investment; as well as, the project implementation of the Regional Government and works of irrigation systems in Local Governments. The Agribusiness sector was encouraged by the increase of the crops destined to the foreign market and agroindustry, such as the coffee and cacao of which is the second producer at national level; likewise, the potato and corn increased. In the livestock subsector, it increased the production of beef cattle and sheep, mainly.


Agribusiness sector favoured in the development of the economy of Ayacucho by 9.8%
During the second quarter of 2025, the productive activity of Ayacucho increased by 9.8%, compared to the same quarter of 2024, accumulating six periods of continuous growth. The positive result of the Agribusiness sector, answered to the increase of its main crops destined to the domestic market, such as potato and alfalfa; as well as the cacao and coffee destined to the foreign market and agroindustry. The good performance of the Construction sector was due to the physical progress of works of the Regional Government and the increase of the Construction sector was due to the physical progress of works of the Regional Government and the increase of the Transportation sector was encouraged by the services of air transportation of passengers; in addition, the road transport of cargoes and passengers, before the opening of the bridge Ccanchi that communicates Ayacucho with Apurimac, added to the visitors flow during Holy Week.


Manufacturing activity outstood in the growth of the production of Piura by 6.0%
During the second quarter of 2025, the economy of Piura expanded by 6.0% compared to the second quarter of 2024, registering five continuous periods of positive behavior. In the Manufacturing sector influenced the development of industries related to the processing of canned and frozen hydrobiological resources in Paita, before the greater foreign demand of frozen squid; the oil refining, the milling industry, noodles, bakery and others; and meat processing. In addition, the dynamism of the Construction sector was due to the greater investment of the National Government with the creation of two bridges, placed in the provinces of Morropón and Piura; likewise, the Regional Government with the works of the departmental road in the provinces of Piura and Sechura. The same trend, showed the Agribusiness sector based in the increase of its main crops, such as the paddy rice, Caupi dried bean, grapes and avocado; in addition of the livestock production of cattle beef, fresh milk and poultry.


Economy of Cajamarca increased by 5.8% influenced by the mining subsector
During the months of April, May and June of 2025, the production of Cajamarca registered a growth of 5.8%, compared to the same period of 2024, based in the mining activity due to the higher volume obtained of gold in the mining Yanacocha, being the region the second gold producer at national level; in addition, it increased the extraction of copper in Gold Fields La Cima; and the production of avocado in the companies Coimolache, Yanacocha and La Zanja. In addition, it increased the electricity subsector due to the high generation of electric energy in the hydraulic power stations, Gallito Ciego, Carhuaquero and Potrero. Meanwhile, the Agribusiness sector reduced affected by the agribusiness subsector that registered a decrease of their main crops, such as the starchy maize, hard yellow corn, dried bean and coffee; on the other hand, it increased slightly the livestock subsector due to the superior production of fresh milk.


Production of the department of Lima increased by 2.8% due to the dynamism of the Manufacturing sector
The economy of the department of Lima increased by 2.8% during the second quarter of 2025, compared to the same quarter of the last year, accumulating five quarters of consecutive growth, determined by the Manufacturing activity, before the increase of the industries associated to the corn flour-processing and fish oil; the production of meats; the preparation of meats; the preparation of frozen of marine resources; and fish oil; the production of meats; the preparation of frozen of marine resources; in addition, of dairy products; textiles and clothing items. In the Commerce sector outstood the wholesale trade of other type of machinery and equipment; the same performance registered the wholesale trade of solid, liquid and gas fuels and allied products; likewise, the sector of retail trade of pharmaceutical and medical products, cosmetics and toiletries, driven by the discounts and entry of new product lines. And the Transportation sector was driven by the air transportation service; in addition, the urban and interprovince road transportation contributed.


Construction sector affected the productive activity of Tumbes by 10.8%
During the second quarter of 2025, the production of Tumbes decreased by 10.8%, compared to the second quarter of 2024, due to the unfavourable result of Construction sector that registered a lower investment in the works of protection against floods, improvement of roads and works of potable water and sewerage. In addition, the Agribusiness sector reduced due to the lower crops of paddy rice, banana, corn and yuca; as well as the livestock products, such as the beef cattle, goat, swine and eggs. It is worth to mention that during the second quarter of 2024 the economy of Tumbes had been increased by 14.7%.


Economy of Ancash decreased by 7.9% due to the low mining activity
The productive activity of Ancash reduced by 7.9% during the second quarter of 2025, compared to the same quarter of 2024, caused by the mining activity, before the lower volume obtained of copper, molybdenum and gold extraction. Nevertheless, the production of zinc, silver and lead increased. The contraction of the Manufacturing sector was associated to the industries related to the preparation of fishmeal and fish oil before the limited availability of anchovy in the ports of Chimbote, Coishco and Samanco, due to the unfavourable oceanographic conditions; linked to the decrease of the production of canned of marine resources; the milling industry; noodles, bakery and others; and the preparation of sugar. In the Construction sector decreased the investment in works of protection against floods.


Productive activity of Cusco registered an unfavourable behavior of 4.9%
During the second quarter of the year 2025, the production of Cusco decreased by 4.9% compared to the second quarter of the last year, influenced by the reduction of the hydrocarbons subsector reflected in the lower exploitation of natural gas liquids and natural gas; on the other hand, it slightly increased the mining subsector due to the greater extraction of copper, molybdenum, silver, zinc and lead, that was attenuated by the low production of gold. Meanwhile, the Agribusiness sector contracted due to the lower crops of coffee, cacao, potato, alfalfa and dried fava; in addition, the livestock production of sheep, alpaca and cattle beef decreased. In the Construction sector decreased the investment of Local Governments with works of the Municipal Palace of Pichari in the province of La Convención; and the Regional Government with the comprehensive project of the Vía Expresa of the city of Cusco. On the other hand, it increased the Transportation sector driven by the greater air movement of passengers; the same performance, registered the transportation service of passengers by road and by rail. de la ciudad de Cusco.
