INEI: Consumer prices in Lima Metropolitan area decreased 0.29% in August of 2025

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the month of August of 2025, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of Lima Metropolitan area decreased 0.29% compared with the last month, registering an accumulated variation of 1.24% and that of the last 12 months (September 2024 – August 2025) of 1.11%.


In the technical report Variation of the Price Indicators of the Economy is explained that the monthly result was mainly influenced, by the lower prices observed in the consumption divisions: Foods and non-alcoholic beverages (-1.05%), Accommodation, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (-0.94%), Transportation (-0.15%) and Alcoholic Beverages, tobacco and narcotics (-0.02%).


On the other hand, the following divisions registered increase of prices: Furniture, articles for household and routine household maintenance (0.24%), Goods and different services (0.22%), Restaurants and hotels (0.20%), Recreation and culture (0.11%), Education (0.07%), Clothing items and footwear (0.07%) Health (0.05%) and Communications (0.01%).


During the month under analysis, a decrease of prices was observed in Foods and Non-alcoholic beverages was due to the decrease in prices of fishes and seafood (-12.6%) such as horse mackerel (-28.4%), Bonito fish (-18.3%), hake (-10.4%), mackerel (-10.0%) and Lisa fish (-9.1%); other food products (-5.2%) such as, cilantro (-31.0%), basil (-23.0%), ground garlic (-19.5%), ground fresh yellow chili (-7.9%) and hydrated seasonings (-4.2%); and vegetables, legumes including potatoes and other tubers (-1.8%) such as green peas (-15.2%), broccoli (-7.9%), spinach (-7.4%), corn (-5.9%), whole garlic (-4.9%) and carrot (-4.8%).


Likewise, the prices of bread and cereals decreased (-0.9%) such as purple corn (-3.4%), long (-2.3%) and short (-1.3%) dried pasta; and rice in bulk (-0.9%). In addition, sugar, marmalade, honey, chocolate and sugar candies (-0.7%) such as the brown (-2.5%) and white (-2.4%) sugar; and in the group of milk, cheese and eggs (-0.1%) and chicken eggs showed a decrease (-0.5%).


Meanwhile, it increased the prices of fruits (1.0%) such as lemon (33.9%), strong avocado (8.0%), black grape (5.0%), regular apple (3.9%), passion fruit (3.7%) and white grape (3.2%); nevertheless, the blueberries (-19.1%), strawberry (-12.6%), granadilla (-9.1%), mango (-3.6%) a pineapple (-3.3%).


The following items showed an increase: meat (0.6%) such as eviscerated chicken (1.8%), chicken cuts: leg (1.5%) and breast (0.3%); and oils and fats (0.3%) outstanding packaged vegetable oil (0.3%).


In Accommodation, water, electricity, gas and other fuels decreased the residential electricity rates (-3.5%) due to new tariff sheet as of August 4th of 2025, residential natural gas natural (-3.2%) due to the new tariff sheet as of August 1st of the current year; and of the domestic propane gas (-1.3%).


In the Transportation division decreased the ticket prices of interprovincial omnibus (-7.8%), transportation of passengers by air (-4.0%) due to the reduction of prices of the international (-4.4%) and national (-2.9%) air ticket; and the fuel for vehicles (-2.2%) due to the lower prices of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) (-5.7%) and gasohol (-2.2%).


The increase of price in the division Restaurants and hotels answers the increase registered in the service of food in restaurants and similar facilities (0.2%) such as tamales (1.1%), Broaster chicken (0.9%), sandwiches (0.4%) and menu in restaurants (0.2%); and service of beverages in restaurants and similar facilities (0.1%) such natural fruit juices (0.4%) and liquefied fruit juices (0.2%).


Products that affected in the monthly result
The result of the month of August of 2025 was influenced, mainly, by the reduction of prices registered in Foods and non-alcoholic beverages by the lower prices in fishes and seafood, vegetables, tubers, and other food products; nevertheless, the prices in fruits, meat and coffee and tea and cacao increased. In addition, also influenced Accommodation, water, electricity, gas by the reduction of electric tariff sheets and gas for domestic use and Transportation by lower prices in fuels and the ticket in interprovince omnibus.


Products with greater decrease of prices
In August of 2025, from the 586 products of the family basket, 282 increased the price, 144 decreased the price and 160 did not showed variation. The products with downward prices were: cilantro (-30.98%), horse mackerel (-28.44%), basil (-2,298%), ground garlic (-19.55%), blueberries (-19.15%), Bonito fish (-18.27%), green peas (-15.18%) and strawberry (-12.57%).


Meanwhile, the products that increased the Price in greater proportion were lemon (33.95%), green onion (17.50%), beetroot (16.24%), strong avocado (8.03%), cucumber (6.67%) fresh green fava (5.29%), ground rocoto chili pepper (5.28%) and black grape (5.03%).


Consumer prices without food and energy slightly increased by 0.08%
During August of 2025, the variation of Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area without considering foods and energy increased 0.08%.


At national level, consumer prices decreased 0.20%
At national level, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) decreased 0.20% in August of 2025 compared to the last month, with an accumulated variation of 1.11% and of 1.16% in the last 12 months (September 2024 – August 2025). The divisions that reduced their prices were Accommodation, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (-0.99%), Foods and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.62%), Transportation (-0.24%) and alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics (-0.01%). Meanwhile that it increases the prices of Goods and different services (0.23%), Restaurants and hotels (0.21%), Furniture, articles for household items and routine households’ maintenance (0.18%), Recreation and culture (0.12%), Health (0.10%), Education (0.05%) and Clothing items and footwear (0.04%); meanwhile, the division Communications did not show variation.


Variation of prices by cities
During August of 2025, of 26 cities where the Consumer Price Index, 14 registered increased in their prices. The highest variations were observed in the cities of Huancavelica (0.42%), Huánuco (0.41%), Ayacucho (0.38%) and Ica (0.33%). Meanwhile that of the 12 cities that reduced their prices outstood Trujillo (-0.42%), Chimbote (-0.34%) and Tumbes (-0.31%).


Wholesale prices at national level dropped by 0.76%
The Wholesale Price Index decreased by 0.76% compared to the month of July, due to the reduction of prices in the national products, outstanding the manufactured products (Diesel petroleum, gasohol, liquid petroleum gas, white and brown sugar, chicken meat, industrial wheat flour, soy refined oil, construction rods, cables of general use and detergents); agriculture (green peas, garlic, paddy rice, carrot, potato, starchy maize, sweet potato and tomato) and fishing (horse mackerel, Pejerrey fish, Bonito fish, mackerel, Palometa fish and Boquichico fish). Meanwhile that it increased the price of livestock products (basically live chicken).


In the case of imported goods decreased the prices of the products of manufacturing (Diesel petroleum, wire rod, construction rods, forklift, colour TV, mobile phones, lubricant oils, soy cakes, resins PVC, automobiles and steel sheets) and agribusiness (lentils, apples, wheat and non-carded cotton).


Machinery and equipment prices decreased 0.08%
During the month under analysis, the Price Index of Machinery and Equipment decreased 0.08% compared to the month of July, explained by the appreciation of the Peruvian Sol against the US dollar, that influenced in negative way in the prices of capital goods of national origin, such as agriculture machinery (pickaxes and shovels); other machinery (wheelbarrows); machinery for industry (transformers and concrete mixers); and machinery for transportation (moto-taxi and springs for automotive vehicle).


Likewise, the prices of capital goods of imported origin decreased, such as the machinery for transportation (road tractor for semitrailer, vehicles for transportation of goods and pick-up trucks); and other machinery (different electricity meters and household appliances); nevertheless, the prices of industrial machinery (machinery for preparation of meat, laptop computers and wheel loaders) increased. Meanwhile, the agriculture machinery did not register variation.


Prices of construction materials prices decreased 0.11%
During August of 2025, the prices of construction materials decreased 0.11% compared to the last month, due to the negative behavior of six of the ten groups that are part of it: metallic (LAF and LAC steel sheets, black wire, construction rods, corrugated zinc plated and nails); power supplies (wires and cables for telephone facilities, and cables of general use, for energy and fixed installations); aggregates (concrete); glasses (secondary); wall tiles and mosaics (floor sheathing); and structures of concrete and frames ( flat plates of fibers and cement, and of plasterboard).


Nevertheless, the prices of tubes and plastic accessories (accessories of PVC for electricity, glues, tubes for sewerage, electricity and water); woods (Cachimbo wood, Tornillo, plywood and Capirona wood); and bricks (for roof, Pandereta brick and King kong brick) increased. In the case of binders, do not registered variations.
