INEI participates in the workshop to strengthen the collection of data about Afro-descendant population

In order to standardize methodologies and definitions to characterize the Afro-Andean population, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) participates in the Workshop for the Diagnosis of Sources and Disaggregated Data Review on Afro-descendant Population, organized by The Andean Community (CAN), that aims to review the regulations, questionnaires for the collection of data, as well as registration and existing quantitative information on Afro-descendant population.


This meeting was held within the project “Harmonization of Statistical Parameters for the Characterization of the Afro-Andean Population”, that seeks to set a common statistical framework in the member countries of the CAN. Its purpose is to guarantee comparable information that allow to describe with greater precision to the Afro-Andean population in the region.


The activity is particularly important, since that it will allow to collect experiences and good practices that provide a comprehensive and updated overview of the administrative records and surveys. This will contribute to reflect with greater accuracy the diversity of our societies.


Likewise, the workshop will generate technical inputs to achieve interinstitutional consensus that might be used as basis to move forward a regional statistical harmonization, driven by the design of public policies more inclusive and effective in benefit of the Afro-descendent population.


To obtain reliable and disaggregated information on this population is fundamental by historic, social, cultural and economic reasons. This will allow to identify their contributions to the development to the development of our countries, as well to identify persistent inequalities in education, health, employment, houses and access to justice. This way, will be provided the formulation of public policies and affirmative action which seek to reduce the social gaps.


The event was attended by the Deputy of statistics of the INEI, sub-chief, Peter Abad Altamirano and representatives of the ministry of health and education; as well as senior officials of public entities, among others.
