Employed population of the country reached 17 million 466 thousand 100 persons

According to the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN), during the second quarter of 2025, during the second quarter of 2025, the employed population of the country reached 17 million 466 thousand 100 persons, compared to the same quarter of 2024, increasing by 0.8% (136 thousand 800 persons). This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), in the technical report: Peru: Behaivor of the Indicators of the Labor Market at National level and in 27 Cities.


In addition, that from the total of the employed population of the country, 55.5% (9 million 686 thousand 200) are men and 44.5% (7 million 779 thousand 900) women. By comparing the quarter under analysis, with the same quarter of the year 2024, the male employed population increased by 1.6% (149 thousand 400); meanwhile that the female employed decreased by 0.2% (-12 thousand 600).


Employed population of 45 years old and older increased by 2.9%
During the second quarter of 2025, the employed population of 45 years old and older grew by 2.9% (191 thousand 800) compared to the same quarter of 2024; meanwhile that the population under 25 years old decreased by 1.5% (-37 thousand) and the group of 25 to 44 years old by 0.2% (-18 thousand), compared to the second quarter of the year 2024.


Employed population in the companies of 11 to 50 employees increased by 5.6%
According to size of company, the employed population in the establishments of 11 to 50 employees grew by 5.6% (70 thousand 900), followed by the economic units of 1 to 10 employees by 0.5% (62 thousand) and in the companies of 51 employees and more by 0.1% (3 thousand 900), compared to the same quarter of the last year.


Employed population in the primary sector of the economy grew by 2.5%
During the second quarter of the year 2025, compared to the same quarter of the last year, the employed population in the primary sector of the economy (Agriculture, Fishing and Mining) grew by 2.5% (102 thousand 300), followed by Manufacturing by 1.2% (17 thousand 100), Construction by 1.2% (12 thousand 400), Commerce by 0.4% (11 thousand 500); meanwhile, the activity of Services decreased by 0.1% (-6 thousand 400).


Unemployment rate was of 5.9%
At national level, during the second quarter of 2025, the unemployment rate was of 5.9% and compared to the same period of the last year did not showed variation.


LABOR MARKET INDICATORSIN 27 CITIES


Five cities of the country registered the highest rates of activity
During the second quarter of the year 2025, the cities with the greater rate of labour activity were: Puerto Maldonado (75.7%), followed by Ayacucho (75.2%), Abancay (74.2%), Tarapoto (73.0%) and Moyobamba (72.5%). In lower proportion were the following cities of Huaraz (58.0%), Arequipa (59.4%) and Huánuco (59.7%).


Greater growth of the employed population was registered in five cities
During the second quarter of 2025 among the cities that registered greater increase of the employed population, compared to the same quarter of the last year, outstood: Pucallpa (10.9%), followed by Huancavelica (7.4%), Puerto Maldonado (6.9%) and Ayacucho (6.3%). Nevertheless, it was observed unfavourable variations in Tumbes, Huaraz, Huánuco, Puno and Cerro de Pasco.


Five cities concentrated the greater rates of informal employment
During the period July 2024 – June 2025, the cities with greater rates of informal employment were: Juliaca (82.5%), Pucallpa (73.3%), Ayacucho (71.9%), Tumbes (69.8%) and Moyobamba (69.3%); Meanwhile that the lower rates of informality were registered in the cities of Moquegua (54.4%), Lima Metropolitan area and Constitutional Province of Callao (56.1%) and Ica (56.7%).
