INEI drives the digital transformation of the National Statistical System

More than 1,800 university graduates applied between April and May to the II edition of the Program of University Extension Data Science (PEU-CD 2025), an initiative of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) that bet on young talent and technologic innovation to modernize the National Statistical System.
Through the National School of Statistics and Informatics, the INEI seeks to include data scientists capable to explore new data sources, apply advanced analysis models and to automize processes, in order to produce more appropriate, specific and useful statistics for public and private decision-making.
From all the applicants, 346 entered to an Introductory Intensive Course, and 27 —those with the best academic at national level- were formally admitted to the program. This year, the call achieved a more diverse participation, adding graduates from Huánuco, Cusco, Junín, La Libertad, Piura and Puno, besides of Lima and Callao.
Regarding the education, 59 % comes from the profession of Economy, 33 % comes from the profession of Engineering in Systems and Informatics, and 8% comes from the profession of Statistics. 37 % are women. Likewise, 52 % studied in public universities and 48% studied in private universities.
During five months, these young people are participating as subsidized professional practitioners, receiving training in Python, R, SQL, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, guided by specialist of high level.
The impact of the PEU-CD is already tangible: thanks to its first edition, in 2025 the Laboratory of Statistics Innovation - LabStat, a multidisciplinary space that develops solutions with emerging technologies and macro-data.
The 2025 edition consolidates this approach, strengthening the analytical capability of the INEI to quickly respond to the challenges such as climate change, internal migration, labor informality and new standards of urban consumption.
With the PEU-CD, the INEI is positioned at the forefront of the national statistical system that bet by the data science, in line with international standards and with the recommendations of the United Nations about the use of macro-data, artificial intelligence and big data to improve the decision-making in evidence.
The opening ceremony was carried out in the headquarters of the National School of Statistics and Informatics and was chaired by Gaspar Morán Flores, chief of the INEI, who stressed the importance of train professionals that led the statistical innovation in the country.
