INEI: Five departments contributed with the 74.8% of the total potato production

In May of 2025, the potato production increased in the departments of Puno (27.4%), Ayacucho (19.8%), Junín (7.2%), Huancavelica (6.9%) and Cusco (2.0%), compared to the same month of the last year. These five departments concentrated the 74.8% of the national total.
The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), through the Technical Report Peru: Panorama Económico Departmental, also registered increases in the potato production in Piura (72.9%), Pasco (29.5%), Tacna (13.7%), Arequipa (13.1%) and Amazonas (7.0%). On the other hand, it registered decreases in Moquegua (-26.2%), Lima (-21.2%), Apurímac (-20.0%), La Libertad (- 16.5%), Ancash (-3.3%), Cajamarca (-2.6%) and Huánuco (-1.1%).
At national level, the potato production reached 1 million 664 thousand 416 tons, which represented an increase of 8.8% compared to May of 2024. This result is attributed to the greater crops, favoured by proper climatic conditions that allowed the ripening of the crops, highly demanded by the families in different regions of the country.
Production of paddy rice outstood in six departments
During May of 2025, the production of paddy rice significantly increased in Piura (233.8%), La Libertad (54.5%), Cajamarca (50.7%), Arequipa (23.1%), San Martín (13.2%) and Amazonas (3.3%), compared to the same month of the last year. These six departments concentrated the 67.7% of the national total production.
Likewise, there were registered increases in Junín (42.4%), Huánuco (10.8%), Madre de Dios (4.3%) and Cusco (0.6%). On the other hand, it decreased in Tumbes (-88.2%), Ucayali (-78.7%), Pasco (-69.1%), Loreto (-50.6%), Lambayeque (-26.8%) and Ancash (-10.5%).
Throughout the country, the production of paddy rice totalized 563 thousand 611 tons, which represented a growth of 4.8% compared to May of 2024. This result was favoured by a greater availability of rains that boosted the vegetative development of the crop, intended mainly to domestic consumption.
Arequipa, La Libertad and Lima concentrated the 82.5% of the poultry production
During May of 2025, the poultry production grew in the main production areas: Arequipa (7.7%), La Libertad (5.3%) and Lima (3.7%), compared to the same month of the last year. These regions concentrated the 82.5% of the national total.
The growth also was observed in San Martín (5.4%), Lambayeque (3.1%), Ucayali (3.0%), Piura (2.4%), Loreto (2.0%) and Ancash (2.0%). On the other hand, it contracted in Pasco (-5.9%), Apurímac (-5.3%), Moquegua (-5.1%), Junín (-3.6%) and Ica (-0.1%), among other departments.
At the national level, the poultry production increased by 3.9% compared to May of 2024, driven by the greater number of BB chicken placed for the meat line.
Copper production registered a negative performance
During May of 2025, the copper production was affected by lower volumes extracted in Ancash (-51.5%) and Arequipa (-23.0%) compared to the same month of the last year, as well as in Huánuco (-24.4%), Lima (-20.0%), Cusco (-0.7%) and Moquegua (-0.7%). Nevertheless, these departments represented together the 51.9% of the national total. On the other hand, these departments represented together the 51.9% of the national total. On the other hand, there were registered increases in Apurímac (63.2%), Pasco (50.7%), Puno (34.9%), Junín (22.7%), Ayacucho (21.3%), Cajamarca (19.0%), Huancavelica (10.4%), Ica (8.6%) and Tacna (5.9%).
At national level the copper production reduced by 5.0% compared to the same month of 2024, due mainly to lower volumes extracted in the Mining Company, followed by the Mining Society Cerro Verde, Mine Antapaccay, Mine Condestable, Pan American Silver Huarón and Mine Santa Luisa.
It is worth to mention that during the month under analysis, increased the extraction of zinc (7.2%), lead (4.8%), tin (4.5%) and silver (1.6%), compared to May of 2024. On the other hand, it decreased the production of iron (-62.8%), molybdenum (-24.1%) and gold (-4.7%).
Electricity production registered a positive result
During May of 2025, the production of electricity increased in the departments of Arequipa (83.5%), Puno (79.0%), Junín (34.0%), Huancavelica (12.1%), Cajamarca (12.1%), Cusco (10.8%) and Huánuco (5.5%), compared to the same month of the last year, which represented together the 42.4% of the total generated. In addition, there were registered increases in Lambayeque (99.4%), Tacna (55.4%), Tumbes (35.6%), Madre de Dios (35.1%), Apurímac (16.1%), San Martín (12.3%), Ayacucho (2.8%) and Loreto (2.5%).
On the other hand, the electric production decreased in Ucayali (-41.8%), Piura (-22.9%), Ancash (- 17.1%), Pasco (-14.2%), La Libertad (-11.8%), Lima (-7.7%), Ica (-6.6%), Amazonas (-3.3%) and Moquegua (-0.9%).
At national level, in May of 2025, the electricity production grew by 1.8% compared to May of 2024, driven by the greater use of hydraulic energy, mainly in the power stations of San Gabán II, Gallito Ciego, Cerro del Águila, Santa Teresa, Chimay, Aricota I, Malpaso, La Virgen, Ángel I, II and III, Charcani IV and V, Chaglla, Yanango and Carhuaquero IV. Also increased the generation of solar renewable energy. On the other hand, the thermic generation energy reduced in powerstations such as Aguaytía, Refinería Talara, Chilca 1, Malacas 1, Fénix, Las Flores, Ventanilla and Caña Brava, as well as wind generation energy.
Revenues by domestic taxes grew in 23 departments
During May of 2025, a total of 23 departments registered increases in income by domestic taxes, compared to the same month of the last year. It outstood Ancash (61.7%), Cusco (34.2%), La Libertad (31.0%), Lima (16.6%) and Arequipa (12.8%), which concentrated the 93.8% of the total collected. The only region that registered a decrease was Ica (-2.8%).
In national terms, during May of 2025 the incomes by domestic taxes totalized 11 thousand 937 million 312 thousand Soles, which represented an increase of 16.9% compared to May of 2024. This result was driven by greater payments of the income tax in all its categories (first, second, third, fourth and fifth), as well as the areas of not-domiciled, regularization, special regime and MYPE tax regime. Also, grew incomes by Value Added Tax, Selective Excise Tax and Special Mining Tax.
