INEI: Domestic cement consumption grew 7.72% in May of 2025

In May of 2025, the domestic cement consumption registered an increase of 7.72% compared to the same month of the last year, informed the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) through its technical report Conjuncture Progress of Economic Activity.

This positive result was explained due to the dynamism of the works executed by the private sector. In the accumulated January-May of 2025, the domestic cement consumption grew 3.08% compared to the same period of the last year.


Electricity subsector increased 1.91%
The production of the electricity subsector increased by 1.91% compared to May of 2024, driven by the greater generation of hydroelectric origin energy (14.04%) and wind-solar renewable energies (7.15%); nevertheless, the generation of thermoelectric origin energy reduced by 17.11%.

Among the main companies that increased their production were: La Virgen Electricity Company, GEPSA (Power Generation Plant of Peru), Chinango Power Generation Plant, Inland Energy, Statkraft Perú, CELEPSA (El Platanal Electricity Company), San Gabán, Kallpa Generación, Orygen Perú, Huallaga Power Generation Plant and EGASA (Power Generation Plant of Arequipa).


Fishing sector decreased 4.55%
In May of 2025, the activity of the Fishing sector reduced by 4.55% compared to the same month of 2024, due to the lower landing of species of marine species (-6.62%), mainly of resources intended to indirect human consumption (anchovy for fishmeal and fish oil), that totalized 1’327,621 tons, a lower volume to that registered in May of 2024 (1’454,863 tons), which represented a decrease of 8.75%.

On the other hand, the fishing for direct human consumption increased 2.06%, driven by the greater capture of species for frozen (44,1%); meanwhile that those intended for canning (-34.6%), consumption in fresh state (-22.7%) and preparation of curing (-18.4%) decreased. Likewise, the continental fishing increased by 66.45% due to the increase in the capture of species for consumption in fresh (95.6%) and frozen (13.2%) state.


Mining and Hydrocarbons reduced 6.92%
During May of 2025, the production of Mining and Hydrocarbons sector drop by 6.92% compared to the same month of the last year, as a consequence of the contraction of the metal-mining subsector (-7.20%), explained by the lower production of iron (-62.8%), molybdenum (-24.1%), copper (-5.0%) and gold (-4.7%); on the other hand, it was observed an increase in the production of zinc (7.2%), lead (4.8%), tin (4.5%) and silver (1.6%).
The hydrocarbon subsector registered a negative variation of -5.07% compared to May of 2024, due to the lower volume extracted of natural gas liquids (-16.0%) and natural gas (-6.4%); meanwhile the production of crude oil grew 17.2%.


Mortgage loans keep positive trend
During May of 2025, the mortgage loans destined to housing acquisition reached S/ 68,476 million, which represented a growth of 5.90%. Likewise, the loans granted to big, medium, small and micro-enterprises totalized S/ 217,812 million (variation of 1.91%), and the consumption credits placed in S/ 73,557 million, with an increase of 1.11% compared to May of 2024.

On the other hand, the number of credit cards issued by the multiple banking totalized 6,439 thousand units, which meant an increase of 2.46% compared to the same month of the last year.


Imports grew 11.49%
During the period analyzed, the total value of imports totalized US$ 5,038 million, registering a growth of 11.49% compared to that of May of 2024. By category, the imports of consumption goods added US$ 1,083 million, with an increase of 15.68% compared to the same month of 2024, according to the information available as of June 22 of 2025.

The imports of raw materials and intermediate products totalized US$ 2,425 million, with a positive variation of 3.02%; meanwhile that the acquisition of capital goods and construction materials totalized US$ 1,524 million, growing 24.12% compared to May of the last year.
