94.4% of older adults have a health insurance, either public or private

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that, during the first quarter of 2025, 94.4% of persons of 60 years old and older have some type of health insurance, either public or private. This figure represents an increase of 2.2 percentage points compared to the same period of 2024 (92.2%), according to the technical report Situation of Older Adult Population.
Broken down the information by residence area, it was observed that, compared to the same quarter of 2024, the access to a health insurance in Lima Metropolitan area grew by 3.5 percentage points (from 91.5% to 95.0%), in the rest urban area increased 1.9 percentage points (from 91.8% to 93.7%) and in the rural area increased by 1.1 percentage points (from 94.0% to 95.1%).
More than the half of the older adult population have existing co-morbidities
During 2024, 58.2% of the older adult population registered at least a co-mordidity, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus and /or hypertension. This condition was more frequent in urban areas (62.3%) than in rural areas (42.0%), showing a significant gap in the health state according to the geographical area.
37.5% of the older adult population that had a health problem went to an establishment to seek medical attention
During the quarter January-February-March of 2025, 37.5% of the population of 60 years old and older that registered some health problem sought medical attention in a establishment.
According to type of medical attention establishment, 14.1% went to the Ministry of Health (MINSA), 9.5% went to EsSalud, 7.9% went to pharmacies or apothecaries and 5.2% went to private practices, among others.
In Lima Metropolitan area, the busiest places were EsSalud (14.0%), MINSA (12.0%), pharmacies or apothecaries (6.4%) and private practices (5.0%).
In the rest urban area, older adult population sought medical attention mainly in MINSA (12.7%), EsSalud (10.3%), pharmacies or apothecaries (9,5%) and private practices (5.8%). In the rural area, most attended establishments were those of MINSA (20.1%) and those of pharmacies or apothecaries (7.0%).
45.1% of the households have at least one older adult person
During the first quarter of 2025, 45.1% of the households in the country had at least one person of 60 years old and older, according to the National Household Survey (ENAHO). This figure represents an increase of 3.5 percentage points compared to the same period of the last year (41.6%).
In Lima Metropolitan area, 49.4% of the households had at least an older adult person, 4.7 percentage points more than the registered in the same quarter of 2024 (44.7%). In the rural area, the percentage was of 47.7%, meanwhile that in the rest urban area reached 41.0%, with increases of 3.0 percentage points in both cases.
28.4% of the households was headed by an older adult person
During the quarter under study, at national level, 28.4% of the households have as head of the household a person of 60 years old and older. In the rural area, this proportion was higher (32.2%), meanwhile that in the urban area was of 27.4%.
