INEI: 58.9% of the households in the country have access to the Internet in the first quarter of 2025

During the first quarter of 2025, 58.9% of the households of the country had Internet service, a higher figure in 0.5 percentage point to the registered in the same period of the last year (58.4%). This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in its technical report Statistics of Information and Communication Technologies in the Households, prepared since the results of the National Household Survey (ENAHO).
In Lima Metropolitan area the Access to this service reached the 80.3% of the households; in the rural area, 20.5%, with increases of 2.3 and 1.9 percentage points, respectively. On the other hand, in the rest urban area was registered a decrease of 1.2 percentage points compared to the first quarter of 2024.
95.2% of the households of the country have mobile phone
During the period January-February-March of 2025, the mobile phone continued to being the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with greater presence in the country’s households, with a coverage of 98.0%, followed by the rest urban area with 96.9%, and the rural area with 86.6%.
The use of computers reaches 36.8% of the households
During the quarter under study, 36.8% of the households of the country has at least a computer. In Lima Metropolitan area, this proportion was of 55.0%; in the rest urban area, 41.3%; and in the rural area, barely 8.2%.
Computer skills increase between those that use computers
During the first quarter of 2025, 70.8% of the population of 15 years old and older performed the computer activity of transfer files between computers and other devices, meanwhile that the 72.3% applied simple arithmetic formulas in a spreadsheet. These figures represent increases of 3.1 and 0.8 percentage points, respectively, compared with the same quarter of 2024.
In addition, 92.0% of computer users copied or moved files or folders; 90.8% used functions of copy and paste inside a document; 86.4% sent e-mails with attached files; 69.4% prepared electronic presentations; and 58.5% connected and installed new devices.
Regarding the activities that require greater digital skills, 48.0% of the population of 15 years old and older unloaded, installed and configurate software, which meant a significant increase of 0.6 percentage point against the same quarter of 2024 (47.4%). Likewise, 10.0% drafted programs using specialized programming languages, reflecting an advanced level of digital competences.
79.0% of the population of 6 years old and older used the Internet
During the first quarter of 2025, 79.0% of the population of 6 years old and older use the Internet, which represented an increase of 0.7 percentage point compared to the same period of 2024 (78,3%).
By residency area, the greater level of use of the Internet was observed in Lima Metropolitan area with 89.1% followed by the rest urban area with 82.3%, and the rural area with 52.4%. Regarding the first quarter of 2024, the use of the Internet increased by 3.0 percentage points in the rural area and in 0.4 percentage point in Lima Metropolitan area; in the rest urban area did not register significative changes.
89.8% of the population of 6 years old and older used a cellphone
According to the results of the ENAHO, during the first quarter of 2025, 89.8% of the population of 6 years old and older used a cellphone. By residence area, the use of a cellphone was greater in the rest urban area (91.8%), followed by Lima Metropolitan area (91.3%) and in the rural area (82.0%). Compared to the same quarter of the last year, it registered decreases in the rest urban area (0.8 percentage point) and in Lima Metropolitan area (0.4 punto percentual), meanwhile in the rural area did not observe significative variations.
