In order to strengthen the decision-making in environmental and economic matter, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics ((INEI) and the National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) signed an agreement of interinstitutional cooperation to generate statistics about management and use of forest resources, wildlife and its eco-system services.
This agreement will allow the exchange of key information between both institutions, within the scope of their respective Powers, for the construction of the Forest Account, reports related with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) linked to the forestry sector, and the annual inventories of greenhouse gases, fundamental to the fulfilment of the commitments made by the country to address climate change.
The Forest Account has been developed based on international standards of the United Nations and other global entities, allowing to describe the relation between the environment and the economy, and facilitating the data comparability between countries. It should be noted that the Forest Account will be ready in the first quarter of 2026.
This statistical tool is essential to integrate information about the state and evolution of the forests over time, as well as to measure the participation of the forest sector in the economy. In addition, it allows to derivate consistent and comparable indicators that contributes to the design of sustainable public policies.

Through the Agreement, the INEI and SERFOR agree to exchange technical information for the development of the Forest Account, as well as the development of indicators and statistical reports linked to the forest and wildlife sector. Both institutions will participate in the production process of the mentioned account, within the framework of the System of Environmental and Economic Accountability. It must be noted that the forests cover almost 60% of the national territory.
Likewise, the INEI will offer specialized technical assistance for the development of methodologies, indicators and reports of the sector; as well as to establish the technical and methodological guidelines needed to the execution of researches and treatment of the statistical information required.
