Commerce activity grew 2.83% in April of 2025

During April of 2025, the Commerce sector registered a growth of 2.83% compared to the same month of the last year. This result was based in the positive behavior of the wholesale, retail and automotive commerce, informed the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). Likewise, in the accumulated January- April of 2025, the commercial activity increased by 3.23% compared to the same period of 2024.


Wholesale commerce grew 2.17%
During April of 2025 the wholesale commerce showed a growth of 2.17% compared to the same month of the last year, driven mainly by the increase in the sales of heavy-duty machinery, electric and measurement equipment, medical equipment and office furniture, which translated in a greater invoicing compared to April 2024.

In addition, it was observed a greater demand of household appliances, pharmaceutical and medical products, cosmetics, cutlery tools and gray line, which favored the growth of the sale of household goods. To this situation it added the increase in the commercialization of liquid, gas fuels, lubricants and oils, due to a greater distribution towards the retail supplying centers and distribution companies of domestic gas.
Another factor that contributed to the positive performance of the sector was the greater sale of computers, peripheral equipment and informatic programs, as part of renovation processes of hardware y software. In addition, it increased the sale of foods, beverages, tobacco, favored by a greater variety of trademarks and the opening of new facilities.

On the other hand, it grew the sale of agribusiness raw materials and life animals, such as grains, seeds (coffee), benefitted chicken and inputs to produce foods for animals. Nevertheless, it registered a decrease in the sale of metals and ore minerals, as well as the sale of chemical inputs and laboratory reagents.


Retail commerce increased 3.38%
In April of 2025, the retail commerce registered an increase of 3.38% compared to the same month of 2024, driven by the increase in the sales of supermarkets and minimarkets, within the framework of the previous campaigns of the Mother’s Day.
In addition, it also increased the sales of pharmaceutical and medical products, cosmetics and toiletries, driven by promotions and opening of new sales points. The same behavior showed the sale in department stores, benefited by the opening of new facilities and the strengthening of digital channels.

It was also observed a greater dynamism in the sale of computers, peripheral units, informatic programs and telecommunication equipment, due to the introduction of new versions of hardware in the market. Likewise, the sales of clothing items, leather articles increased due to the credit campaigns and the launching of new season collections.

Likewise, it was registered a great performance3 in the sale of household appliances, kitchen utensils, illumination articles, musical instruments and furniture, driven by the financing through platforms of electronic commerce.
The sale of foods also showed a favorable evolution in fisheries, poultry industries, butcheries and greengrocers, ¿driven by the greater demand associated to the celebration of Holy Week. Also increased the sale of fuels and lubricants in gas stations and self-services. On the other hand, it reduced the sales of hardware articles, paints and glass products, as well as the sale of books, newspapers and stationary items.


Automotive commerce increased by 5.97%
The automotive commerce registered a growth of 5.97% in April of 2025 compared to the same month of the last year, explained by the increase in the sale of light-duty, heavy-duty and smaller vehicles, favored by the promotion campaigns, new business contracts and the opening of new facilities.

Likewise, it increased the sale of parts, pieces and accessories of automotive vehicles, as well as the sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and its components. Also contributed the greater dynamism in the maintenance services and repair of automotive vehicles.
