32 out of 100 agricultural producers are women

The results of the National Agricultural Survey (ENA) 2024 reveals that 31.5% of agricultural producers are women, meanwhile that 68.5% are men. This was informed by the chief of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), Gaspar Morán Flores, during the presentation of this important research.

He also stated that according to the age group, 34.4% are between 50 and 64 years old, 31.2% are between 35 and 49 years old, 25.7% 65 years old and older, and just 8.7% are between 15 and 34 old. Regarding the educational level: 49.4% reached primary education level, 30.3% reached secondary education level, 11.2% does not have education level, 5.0% reached university superior education level and 4.1% reached non-university superior education level.

According to the years dedicated to agrobusiness activity: 26.1% has up to 15 years of experience, 22.3% has between 16 to 25 years of experience, 21.4% between 26 to 35 years of experience and 18.1% between 36 to 45 years of experience and 12.1% has more than 46 years of experience.
The chief of the INEI stressed that the ENA is a key tool for the design of public policies, since the agribusiness sector generates the 22.8% of the employment and represents the 6.7% of the National Gross Domestic Product.


73.8% is dedicated to agribusiness activity
According to the ENA 2024, 73.8% of producers is dedicated to the agribusiness activity, 25.9% just to agriculture and 0.3% to the livestock activity exclusively.

Likewise, 49.7% is uniquely dedicated to the agribusiness activity, meanwhile the 50.3% performs additional activities such as agriculture, livestock and fishing; commerce; fabrication of clothing items; construction, education, restaurants and hotels, transportation, among others.

70.8% of producers is owner of at least one plot of its agricultural unit. From the total, 26.0% has a property title and of this group, just the 16.1% has a registration in public registry.


95.4% of agribusiness units are of family agriculture
The results of the ENA 2024 stated that 95.4% of the agribusiness units belongs to the family agriculture. From these ones, 69.8% employs eventual workers and 30.2% relies in the household labor.


Cajamarca and Cusco lead in presence of producers
At departmental level, Cajamarca and Cusco concentrates more than 10% of the total of agribusiness producers. In La Libertad, Arequipa, Amazonas, San Martín, Huánuco, Huancavelica and Puno the participation range of 5.1% and 10.0%. In the 15 remaining departments, do not exceed the 5.0%.
57.7% of producers harvested potato
Among the transitory crops, 57.7% of agricultural producers harvested potato, followed by the 41.9% starchy maize, 18.5% dry faba bean, 14.5% barley in grain and 14.2% wheat.

In the permanent crops outstood: alfalfa (36.4%), rye grass (23,3%), banana (20.7%), avocado (14.8%) and parchment coffee (13.6%).


85.5% of producers deliver their production to household consumption
85.5% of agribusiness producers deliver their production to household consumption. In addition, 72.2% sells, 56.8% uses as food for animals, 54.3% uses as seed, 45.0% uses as derivates, 4.4% exchange by other things, and 67.6% intended for payment in kind, donations or gifts, thefts, losses or other uses.


65.2% raises cattle and 86.8% raises chickens
Regarding the bigger animal husbandry: 65.2% of producers raises beef cattle, 47.8% swine, 43.8% sheep, 7.0% alpacas, 5.4% goats and 4.0% llamas.

In smaller animals: 86.8% raises chickens, 58.3% roosters, 55.1% guinea pigs, 17.1% chicken for fattening, 10.7% ducks, 5.0% turkeys and 3.2% rabbits.


85.4% apply the good practice with agricultural inputs
During 2024, 85.4% of agriculture units apply at least one good practice in the use of agricultural inputs such as manures, fertilizers and pesticides, as well as techniques of biological control and integrated control of plagues.

In addition, 52.0% of the agricultural units implemented agricultural practices related to irrigation, such as measurement of the use of water and quality analysis, among others.

81.6% received information of agribusiness interest
81.6% of agribusiness producers received relevant information about the sales prices, demand of products, agro-climatic conditions and technical managements of crops and breeding.


Use of manures and fertilizers reach 78.6%
78.6% of producers use manures and/or fertilizers. From them, 52.9% of producers use fertilizers and manures, 32.5% use just manures and 14.6% just fertilizers.


66.3% of agribusiness units has at least 5 hectares
66.3% of agribusiness units has an area less than 5 hectares, while 33.7% has five or more hectares.


24.6% of the agribusiness units has from 3 to 4 parcels
Regarding the number of parcels by agribusiness unit: 24.6% has between 3 to 4 parcels, 22.6% just one, 21.9% between 5 and 9, 21.6% two parcels and 9.4% has more than 9 parcels.

The event took place in the central headquarters of the INEI and participated Mr. César Santisteban Pérez, general director of the General Direction of Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation of Politics of the Ministry of Agriculture Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI); Fernando Castro, representative of the FAO, and Jorge Alarcón, professor of the National University of San Marcos.
