Employed population of Lima Metropolitan area grew 2.0% in the quarter March- April-May of 2025

During the quarter of March-April-May of 2025, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 512 thousand 200 persons, which represented an increase of 2.0% (109 thousand 500 persons) compared to the same period of the last year, informed the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in its technical report Situation of the Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area, prepared with the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN).
According to sex, the male employed population increased by 3.9% (112 thousand 900 persons), meanwhile that the female employed population registered a slight drop of 0.1% (-3 thousand 400 persons), compared to the same quarter of 2024.
Regarding to the composition of the employed population, 54.5% (3 million 5 thousand 800) are men and 45.5% (2 million 506 thousand 400), women.
Greater growth of employment between people of 45 years old and older
According to age group, the greater increase of the employed population was registered between the people of 45 years old and older, with a growth of 7.6% (155 thousand 200), compared to the same period of 2024. In addition, an increase in the group of 25 to 44 years old, with 1.6% (41 thousand 900 persons) was registered. On the other hand, the employed population decreased 12.1% (-87 thousand 700 personas) between the population under 25 years old.
Construction leads growth of employment by sectors
By economic sectors, the employed population grew in Construction (5.8% or 22 thousand 200 personas), Commerce (3.5% or 40 thousand 700), Services (1.7% or 52 thousand 400) and Manufacturing (1.4% or 9 thousand 600), compared to the same period of 2024.
Greater dynamism in medium-sized companies
The employment significantly increased in economic units of 11 to 50 employees (13.3% or 76 thousand 800 persons). Also increased in companies of 51 and more employees (1.7% or 26 thousand 200) and in establishments of 1 to 10 employees (0.2% or 6 thousand 400).
Suitable employment in upward trend and underemployment in downward trend
The population with suitable employment grew 11.8% (372 thousand 400 personas), meanwhile that the underemployment reduced by 11.7% (-262 thousand 900 personas), compared to the same quarter of the last year.
Unemployment rate decreased by 5.6%
During the quarter of March-April-May of 2025, the unemployment rate in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 5.6%, it means, 1.6 percentage points less than in the same quarter of 2024 (7.2%). It is estimated that 326 thousand 300 persons actively sought job during this period.
Average monthly income increased by 7.4%
The average monthly income coming from main work placed in 2 155,0 Soles, which represented an increase of 7.4% (148,2 Soles) compared to the same quarter of the last year.
Greater incomes in persons of 45 years old and older
The average monthly income increased in all age groups, outstanding the group of 45 years old and older with an increase of 7.9% (170,9 Soles) compared to the same period of 2024. Followed by the employees of 25 to 44 years old with 6.3% (130,4 Soles) and also by those employees of 14 to 24 years old with 0.9% (11,9 Soles).
Incomes increased in all levels of education
The income also increased according to education level reached: in persons with secondary education level in 9.8% (144,2 Soles), compared to the same quarter of the year 2024; with university superior education level, 8.3% (256,0 Soles); non-university superior education level, 6.0% (104,8 Soles); and primary or lower education level, 5.0% (59,1 Soles).
Construction sector leads increase of incomes
By sectors, the greater increase of the average income registered in Construction with 21.7% (461,7 Soles), followed by Manufacturing with 16.6% (303,4 Soles) and Services with 7.5% (159,7 Soles). On the other hand, in the Commerce sector the average income reduced by 1.0% (-16,7 Soles).
