In May consumer prices in Lima Metropolitan area decreased 0.06%

In May of 2025, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of Lima Metropolitan area registered a decrease of 0.06% compared to April. With this result, the accumulated variation so far this year reached 1.17 %, and that of the last 12 months (June 2024 – May 2025) placed in 1.69 %, according to the informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in its technical report Variation of the Price Indicators of the Economy.

The monthly variation was mainly explained, by the reduction of prices in the divisions of Foods and non-alcoholic beverages (-0.47%), Transportation (-0.26%) and Accommodation, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (-0.21%). On the other hand, it increased the prices in Alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.42%), Restaurants and hotels (0.34%), Furniture and household items (0.31%), Goods and different services (0.25%), Recreation and culture (0.15%), Clothing items and footwear (0.14%), Education (0.04%), Communications (0.03%) and Health (0.01%).

The decrease of prices in Foods and non-alcoholic beverages answered, to a large extent, to lower prices of products such as coriander (-14.3%), red rocoto pepper (-5.4%) and fresh yellow grounded chili (-3.7%). In addition, it outstood the fruits (-1.6%), with decreases in orange for juice (-10.5%), mandarina (-7.8%), strong avocado (-7.2%) and lemon (-6.9%), sweet granadilla (-6,2%), passion fruit (-3,4%), bananas such as: bizcocho (-3.2%), Island banana (-3.0%), Inguiri banana (-2.3%), and papaya (-2.6%)

In meats, the prices of eviscerated chicken (-1.5%) decreased, such as leg (-1.6%), breast (-1.4%) and wings (-0.8%); eviscerated chicken (-0.9%), chicken innards (-0,8%) and breaded chicken (-0.7%). In addition, it reduced the prices in vegetables and tubers (-0.7%), such as tomato (-15.6%), green onions (-15.2 %), bell pepper (-13.9%), celery (-13.2%), lettuce (-9.5%), olluco (-6.9%), yuca (-6,2%), fresh yellow grounded chili (-5.4%), fresh fava beans (-4.8%) and green beans (-3.1%).

Other products that decreased were milk, cheese, chicken eggs (-2.4 %); and sugar, marmalade, honey, chocolate and fudge (-0.5%), such as, brown sugar (-2.1 %) and white sugar (-1.8 %).

On the other hand, prices of fishes and seafood increased (3.8 %), especially Jurel fish (15.1 %), Caballa fish (11.8 %) and Bonito fish (7.1 %). In addition, it registered increases in coffee, tea and cacao (1.3 %), with increases in grounded toasted coffee (2.4 %) instant coffee (1.9 %) and chocolate products (1.0%). In addition of mineral water, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juice (0.2%) such as still mineral water (1.2%) and hydrating beverage (0.8%).

In the division of Transportation, the prices of fuels for vehicles decreased in average 0.7%, outstanding the diesel petroleum (-1.7 %) and gasohol (-0.9 %). Nevertheless, it increased the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for vehicles (2.0 %) and vehicular gas (0.1 %). In addition, it decreases the prices of transportation of passenger by road (-0.2%) such as the fare in inter-province omnibus (-8.7%) and the transportation of passenger by air (-0.2%) outstanding the domestic air ticket (-3.1%).


In Accommodation, water, electricity, gas and fuels, was registered a drop in the consumption price of residential electricity (-0.8%), due to the application of the new tariff system current fare in force since May 1st to May 4th and the domestic propane gas (-0.7%).

In Restaurants and hotels, the prices of the service of food increased in restaurants and similar facilities in 0.3 %, driven by the greater costs in services such as (1.1%), breakfasts in restaurants (0.9 %), Broaster chicken (0.8%), Creole dishes (0.7%) and menu in restaurants (0.2%). The beverages also increased: natural refreshments (0.8%) and hot drinks (0.6%).

Products that registered a greater decrease of prices
During the month of May, from the 586 products that are part of the family basket, 302 increased the price, 154 decreased and 130 products did not registered variation. The products with downward prices were tomatoes (-15.59%), green onion (-15.19%), coriander (-14.31%), chili pepper (-13.88%), celery (-13.21%), orange for juice (-10.50%), lettuce (-9.48%) and inter-province omnibus ticket (-8.66%). Meanwhile, among the products that registered increase of prices outstood: horse mackerel (15.13%), carrot (14.65%), mango (13.89%), mackerel (11.85%), cucumber (8.10%), white grape (7.50%), spinach (7.13%) and Bonito fish (7.09%).

The reduction of prices in key products such as eviscerated chicken, chicken eggs, mandarin and inter-province ticket had a significant impact in the monthly variation, subtracting -0,117 percentage points to the CPI. On the other hand, the increases in the prices of fishes, carrot, mango and menu in restaurants pushed up to the increase in the indicator.

Consumer prices without considering foods and energy increased 0.05%
During the month of May of the current year, the variation of the Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area without considering foods and energy (underlying inflation) increased 0.05%.


Consumer prices at national level decreased 0.05 %
At national level the Consumer Price Index decreased 0.05% in May, accumulating 1.05% and in the las 12 months (June 2024-May 2025) was of 1.72%. The divisions with greater incidence to downward prices were Food and non-alcoholic beverages (-0,40%), Transportation (-0.31%) and Accommodation, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (-0.18%).

Among the increases, outstood Alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.59%), Restaurants and hotels (0.29%), Goods and different services (0.23%), Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance (0.23%), Recreation and culture (0,15%), Clothing items and footwear (0.08%), Health (0.07%), Education (0.06%) and Communications (0.01%).

Variation of prices by cities
During the month of May of the current year, 15 cities registered decrease of prices, outstanding Trujillo (-0.29%), Tacna (-0.25%), Chimbote (-0.25%), Puerto Maldonado (-0.20%), Tumbes (-0.19%) and Huancavelica (-0.18%), among others.

Meanwhile that in cities such as Iquitos (0.33%), Cusco (0.14%), Pucallpa (0.13%), Moyobamba (0.12%) and Cajamarca (0.12%) were observed increased.


Wholesale prices drop 0.40%
The Wholesale Price Index decreased 0.40% in May, driven by lower prices of agriculture products (tomato, orange, olluco, avocado, mandarin, corn, onion, lemon, paddy rice and hard yellow corn), livestock (chicken and live chicken, eggs, swine and cattle), and manufactured (turkey and swine meat, brown sugar, oatmeal, whole-wheat flour, milled rice, plastic sleeves, liquefied petroleum gas, Diesel petroleum, gasohol, cables of general use and cotton yarn); meanwhile that the upward prices were registered in fishing products (Bonito fish, mackerel, cachema and horse mackerel).

In the case of imported goods drop the manufactured products (soy cakes, polyethylene resins and PVC, carbon black, road tractors for semi-trailers, diesel petroleum and construction rods) and agribusiness (Cotton, not carded, hard yellow corn and wheat).

Prices of machinery and equipment grew decreased 0.51%
During the month under analysis, the Price Index of Machinery and Equipment decreased 0.51% compared to the last month, due to the reduction of prices in the imports capital goods, such as machinery and equipment for industry (wheel loaders, bulldozers, desktop computer and printers); other machinery (different electricity meters and electromedical devices); agriculture machinery (tractors) and machinery and equipment for the transportation (road tractor for semi-trailers, vehicles for the transportation of persons, oil filters).

Likewise, capital goods of national origin showed downward prices, influenced in machinery and equipment for the industry (metallic tanks, transformers and electric boards); machinery for the transportation (car bodies and springs for automotive vehicle) and other machinery (nets for a catch and clinic beds). Meanwhile, the agriculture machinery did not observe variation.

Prices of construction materials increased 0.14%
In Lima Metropolitan area, the prices of construction materials increased 0.14%, compared to the last month, due to the increase of prices in three of the ten groups that are part of this indicator outstanding the metallic products (wire rod, construction rod and fittings); bricks (for roof, pastelero brick and Pandereta brick) and aggregates (concrete).

On the other hand, the prices of the group of electric supplies reduced (power cables, telephone facilities); glasses (primary and templated); tubes and plastic accessories (tanks for water, PVC tubes and accessories for water and sewerage); binders (Portland cement type I); concrete structures (sheets of flat and corrugated fibers); tiles and mosaics (wall coating) and woods (Capirona wood, plywood and Cachimbo wood).
