Employed population of Lima Metropolitan area grew 1.7% during the mobile quarter January – February- March of 2025

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the first quarter of 2025, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 449 thousand 300 persons, a higher figure in 1.7% (89 thousand 600 persons) to the registered during the same quarter of 2024. This was informed in the technical report “Situation of the Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area”, prepared with the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN).

It is stated that from the total employed population, 54.6% (2 million 976 thousand 500) are men and 45.4% (2 million 472 thousand 800) are women.


Male employed population increased by 2.9%
During the quarter under analysis, the male employed population was greater in 2.9% (83 thousand 700) and the female employed population in 0.2% (5 thousand 900), compared to the same quarter of 2024.


Employed population of 45 years old and older grew by 5.9%
By age groups, during the quarter under study and compared to the same period of 2024, the employed population of 45 years old and older increased by 5.9% (116 thousand 500) and in the group of 25 to 44 years of age increased by 3.6% (93 thousand 600); meanwhile it decreased by 15.3% (-120 thousand 500) in the population under 25 years old.


Employed population with non-university superior education level grew by 6.6%
According to education level, the employed population with non-university superior education level increased by 6.6% (72 thousand 600), during the first quarter of this year, compared to the same quarter of the last year.

Likewise, the employed with secondary education level increased by 0.9% (19 thousand 700) and those that reached university superior education level increased by 0.7% (11 thousand 500). Meanwhile, the employed population with primary or lower education level reduced by 3.5% (-14 thousand 400).


Employment in construction sector increased by 8.3%
By comparing the quarter under study with the same quarter of the last year, the employed population increased by 8.3% in the construction sector (32 thousand 400), in manufacturing sector 4.3% (28 thousand 300), services 2.2% (68 thousand); on the other hand, in commerce decreased by 2.5% (-29 thousand 400).


Employment in companies of 11 to 50 employees grew by 17.6%
The employed population increased by 17,6% in the economic units of 11 to 50 employees (95 thousand 900), compared to the first quarter of the year 2024. In addition, it increased by 4.7% (69 thousand 100) in the companies of 51 and more employees; meanwhile that in the establishments of 1 to 10 employees decreased by 2.3% (-75 thousand 400).


Population with suitable employment grew 10.7%
During the mobile quarter January-February-March of 2025, the population with suitable employment reached 3 million 488 thousand 500 persons, by increasing in 10.7% (337 thousand 400), compared to the same quarter of the last year.
On the other hand, the underemployed population contracted by 11.2% (-247 thousand 800), compared to the same quarter of the year 2024.


Unemployment rate placed in 6.6%.
During the first quarter of this year, the unemployment rate of Lima Metropolitan area placed in 6.6% and decreased in 1.1 percentage points, compared with the quarter January- February-March of the year 2024. During this period, it is estimated that 382 thousand 300 persons sought employment actively.


Average monthly income grew by 6.8%
During the quarter under study, the average monthly income coming from work of the main activity in Lima Metropolitan area was of 2,114 Soles, amount higher in 6.8% (134.8 Soles), compared to the same quarter of the last year.


In all age groups increased the average monthly income
The INEI informed that the income increased by 8.0% (166.2 Soles) in the group of 45 years old and older; in 4.8% (101.1 Soles) among those that are 25 to 44 years old and in the employed population under 25 years old, in 1.5% (19.1 Soles).


Average monthly income increased by 18.9% in those employed in the Construction sector
The results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN) revealed that the average monthly income increased in the employed population of the Construction sector in 18.9% (404.1 Soles), in Commerce 15.7% (231.0 Soles), Services 4.4% (94.1 Soles) and Manufacturing in 1.7% (33.4 Soles).
