Peru was elected as member of the United Nations Statistical Commission for the period 2026-2029

The members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected by acclamation as member of the United Nations Statistical Commission for the period 2026-2029. With this designation, Peru will cover one of the three vacancies of the Latin America and Caribbean regional group (GRULAC), together with Brazil and Cuba.

The Chief of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics, Gaspar Morán Flores affirmed that this election represents an international recognition to the commitment and the trajectory of the country in the strengthen of the National Statistical System (SEN) and in the promotion of quality, timely, transparent and aligned official statistics with global standards.
“This designation not just extols the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), but also reaffirms the technical leadership of Peru in the region and at international level, consolidating our active role in the development of official statistics. The technical independence, processes, informative transparency and quality in the information management allows us to establish at this level”, added Morán Flores.

The election of Peru as member of the United Nations Statistical Commission represents a milestone of high strategic value, since it will allow the country to integrate into one of the most influential and prestigious technical bodies of the United Nations system. This international recognition not just positions Peru at the forefront of the global statistical development, but also decisively strengthen its path towards the adhesion to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The United Nations Statistical Commission is the most important body of the global statistical system and the maximum entity of coordination in the international statistical activities. Its responsibility extends from the establishment of statistical standards till the development of concepts and methods, as well as its implementation among the member countries.
The incorporation of Peru to the United Nations Statistical Commission reaffirms its commitment with the strengthening of the statistical systems, both at national and international level. This participation will allow the country to encourage the use of reliable and timely data as a basis for decision making, in compliance with the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Finally, Gaspar Morán thanked all the INEI professionals at national level that carries out censuses, households’ surveys and economic surveys, national accounts, short-term economic indicators, poverty estimations, population projections, labor market statistics, victimization surveys, statistics of municipalities, among others; as well as the personnel of the institutions of the National Statistical System, for their dedication, excellence and commitment with the development of the country. “This designation drives us to continue working with greater responsibility, transparency and innovation to serve all Peruvians”, he expressed
