42.0 % of the households of the country has among their members an Older Adult

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that in the fourth quarter of the year 2024, 42.0 % of the households of the country have among their members, at least one person of 60 years old and older or older adult, a higher figure in 2.1 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the year 2023 (39.9 %).
According to technical report the Situation of Older Adult Population prepared with the result of the National Household Survey (ENAHO) of the fourth quarter of 2024, in Lima Metropolitan area, 46.2 % of the households have an older adult person and, in the rest urban area the 38.2%, registering increases of 2.1 and 2.5 percentage points, respectively, compared to the same quarter of 2023. In lower proportion (1.4 percentage points) increased the households with older adult population in the rural area, by going from 42.8 % to 44.2 %.


39.9 % of the older adult population with some chronic health problem sough medical attention
During the fourth quarter of the year 2024, 39.9 % of the population of 60 years old and older with some chronic health problem sought medical attention. By residence area, from the population of 60 years old and older with some chronic health problem sought medical attention. By residence area, in Lima Metropolitan area reached 41.0 %, followed by the rural area (40.1 %) and in the rest urban area (39.0 %).
Compared to the same quarter of the year 2023, the greater percental growth was registered in the rural area in 4.0 percentage points, followed by the rest urban area in 1.5 percentage points. On the other hand, it decreased in 3.9 percentage points in Lima Metropolitan area.


13.3 % of the older adult population with health problems went to the Ministry of Health establishments
During the quarter October-November-December of 2024, the older adult population with some health problem that sought medical attention in an establishment was of 40.6 %. According to place or establishment of consultation, 13.3 % of older adult population went to establishments of the Ministry of Health (MINSA), 11.6 % went to a pharmacy or apothecary, 7.4 % went to establishments of the Health Social Insurance (EsSalud) and 6.4 % went to a private practice, among the main ones.
The INEI also informed that in Lima Metropolitan area, the place or establishment of greater consultation was the pharmacy or apothecary (11.7 %), followed those of by MINSA (10,8 %). In the rest urban area, sought medical attention in greater proportion in the pharmacy or apothecary (12.7 %) and in MINSA (10.4 %). Meanwhile that in the rural area, this population group chose MINSA establishments (22.9 %) and in pharmacy or apothecary (9.5 %), among others.


93.9 % of the population of 60 years old and older has some health insurance
According to the results of the National Household Survey (ENAHO), in the fourth quarter of 2024, of the total of the older adult population of 60 years old and older, 93.9 % has some health insurance (being public or private).
Regarding, outstood the affiliation coverage to some health insurance of the residents in Lima Metropolitan area and the rest urban area with 94.0 %, for each case and the rural area with 93.2%.


More than the half of the population of 60 years old and older accessed to the Comprehensive Health Insurance
By type of health insurance, 54.3 % of the older adults just accessed to the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS) and 34.8% just the Social Security of EsSalud. Registering in the first term an increase of 2.2 percentage points; meanwhile that between those insured persons to EsSalud did not observe a significative variation.


Households composed of just the older adult increased
During the last quarter of the year 2024, from the total of households with a 60 years old and older chief, 25.3 % of the households are single person household (consisting just for the older adult), increasing in 2.3 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the last year (23.0 %).
Likewise, 48.2 % are households of nuclear type, it means, they are composed by a couple and their children or without them, 19.0 % of households are extended, or alternatively to the nuclear household are added other relatives, 6.2 % are households without nucleus (consisting by a chief without spouse or children, that lives with other persons with which they could or could not have family relationship) and 1.3% are households composed, it means inside the households besides relatives, other members that are not relatives.


24.5 % of the older adult household’s chiefs were benefited from the Pension 65 program
During the quarter under analysis, 24.5 % of the older adult household’s chiefs declared to be benefited of the Pension 65 program, a higher figure in 4.3 percentage points than the registered during the quarter of the last year (20.2 %).

The population of 60 years old and older that use the Internet increased
For the quarter under analysis, 48.6 % of the older adult population used the Internet, proportion that grew in 3.7 percentage points, compared to the same quarter of the last year (44.9 %). According to residence area, in the urban area reached to the 57.5 % of this population group and in the rural area reached to the 14.9 %.
