Employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 459 thousand 400 persons between December 2024 and February 2025

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the mobile quarter December 2024 and January-February 2025, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 5 million 459 thousand 400 persons, a higher figure in 2.6% (135 thousand 500), than the registered in the same quarter of the last year.

In the technical report Situation of the Labor Market in Lima Metropolitan area, prepared with the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN); is stated that from the total of the employed population, 54.4 % (2 million 971 thousand) are men and 45.6 % (2 million 488 thousand 400) are women.


Employment grew mainly in the male employed population
During the quarter under analysis, the INEI informed that the male employed population increased by 3.4 % (96 thousand 300) and the female employed population increased by 1.6 % (40 thousand 200), compared to the mobile quarter December 2023 and January -February 2024.


Employed population of 45 years old and older increased by 5.7
%
According to age groups, the employed population of 45 years of age and older increased by 5.7 % (113 thousand 100), followed by the group of 25 to 44 years old by 4.3% (111 thousand 300), meanwhile it decreased by 11.8 % (-87 thousand 900) in the population of 14 to 24 years old, compared to the quarter December 2023 and January – February 2024.


The employed population with secondary education level increased by 3.4%
According to education level, the employed population with secondary education level grew by 3.4 % (77 thousand 600), during the quarter under analysis. Likewise, among those that reached university superior education level increased by 3.6% (55 thousand 300) and in those that had non-university superior education level by 1.4 % (15 thousand 400). Meanwhile, it decreased among those that have primary or lower education level by 3.0 % (-11 thousand 800).


Employment in the Construction activity grew by 9.4 %
By comparing the quarter December 2024 and January-February 2025, with the same quarter of the last year, the employed population working in Construction activity increased by 9.4 % (37 thousand), in manufacture increased by 3.0 % (19 thousand 700), in commerce increased by 2.2 % (25 thousand 400) and in services increased by 1.9 % (58 thousand 100).
Employed population in companies of 11 to 50 workers increased by 17.3 %
The employed population increased by 17.3% (93 thousand 500) in the economic units of 11 to 50 employees, in the companies of 51 and more employees increased by 4.3% (62 thousand 200); meanwhile that in the establishments of 1 to 10 employees decreased by 0.6 % (-19 thousand 200).


Population with suitable employment in Lima Metropolitan area increased by 10.8 %
During the quarter December 2024 and January -February 2025, the population of Lima Metropolitan area with suitable employment reached 3 million 495 thousand 300 persons and registered a growth of 10.8 % (341 thousand 900). On the other hand, the underemployed population decreased by 9.5 % (-205 thousand 400).


Unemployment rate was of 6.3% in Lima Metropolitan area
During the mobile quarter under analysis, the unemployment rate in Lima Metropolitan area placed in 6.3% and it is estimated that 366 thousand 900 persons seek actively employment in the capital city.


Average monthly income coming from work increased by 7.7 %
The INEI informed that the average monthly income coming from work of the main activity in Lima Metropolitan area was of S/ 2,134.30, amount that, compared to the same quarter of the last year, increased by 7.7% (152.00 Soles). The monthly average income of men was placed in S/ 2,413.30 and that of women in S/ 1,792.70 Soles. The income of women is equivalent to 74.3% of the income of men.


The income of the employed population of 45 years old and older grew by 7.4%
During the quarter December 2024 and January-February 2025, the income increased by 7.4% (152.90 Soles) compared to the same quarter of the last year, in the group of 45 years old and older increased by 6.8% (143.70 Soles); among those between 25 to 44 years old, as well as between the employed under 25 years of age increased by 4.0 % (48.40 Soles).


Average monthly income coming from work increased in most sectors
The average monthly income coming from work increased among those employed that perform activities in Commerce sector by 16.4% (S/ 239.20); Construction sector by 16.3% (S/ 345.10), Services sector by 5.8 % (S/ 122.40); nevertheless, in manufacturing sector decreased by 0.8% (S/ -15.60).
