Productive activity grew in 17 departments

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) revealed in the Technical Report “Indicator of the Departmental Productive Activity” that the economy of 17 departments increased during the fourth quarter of 2024, compared to the same quarter of 2023.
Among the 12 departments that registered higher rates than the national average and contributed together with the 73.7% of the total of the national production, it outstood the following departments: Apurímac (19.7%) driven by the mining; Lambayeque (10.3%) and La Libertad (10.1%) due to the greater dynamism of the agricultural sector. In addition, it increased the production in the departments of Tumbes (9.2%), Ica (6.5%), Junín (4.4%), Loreto (4.8%), Huánuco (4.5%), Lima (4.7%), Piura (4.6%), Madre de Dios (4.4%) and Ayacucho (4.3%).
Meanwhile, during the last quarter of 2024, seven departments showed negative behaviors compared with the same period of 2023, like Pasco (-5.5 %), Tacna (-3.6%), Cusco (-2.7 %) and Ucayali (-1.8%), explained by the decrease of mining, hydrocarbons and construction sectors; Amazonas (-5.1%) before the contraction of the construction and agricultural sectors; as well as Ancash (-2.2 %) and Moquegua (-0.5%) attributed to the lower mining activity.
According to geographic zones, the favorable performance of the economy was registered in all the zones, to the North (6.6 %), Center (4.1 %), East (2.3 %) and South (1.5 %).
Production of Apurimac increased by 19.7% driven by the copper, gold and silver extraction
During the fourth quarter of 2024, the economy of Apurímac expanded by 19.7%, registering favorable results during two quarters in a row, determined by mining activity associated to the greater extraction of copper in the Mining Las Bambas, encouraged by the high ore grades in the mine Ferrobamba; added to the increased production of gold and silver. In addition, the dynamism of the construction sector was due to the investment of local governments with road works in the provinces of Cotabambas and Andahuaylas, as well as in systems of potable water and sewerage in the province of Cotabambas; linked to works of the national government with the improvement of the penitentiary establishment of Abancay. The same trend showed the telecommunications sector influenced by the demand of services of fixed internet and mobile phone of controlled consumption.
The economy of Lambayeque increased by 10.3 % favoured by the agriculture production
During the last quarter of 2024, the production of Lambayeque increased in 10.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2023, registering three periods of continuous growth, driven by the agriculture activity that registered greater crops intended to the foreign market and agroindustry, such as the blueberry, grape and sugar cane. The growth of the construction sector was based in the works performed by the national government in the protection of floods of the Motupe and Olmos Rivers.
In addition, it contributed the creation of pedestrian bridges in the province of Lambayeque that executed the regional government. The transportation sector was driven by the service of passengers’ transportation, before the mobilization of tourists during the holidays in the quarter under study; and the transportation of land cargo, due to the movement of products related to agriculture and construction sectors.
Economy of La Libertad grew by 10.1 % explained by the Agro-livestock and Manufacturing sector
During the fourth quarter of 2024, the productive activity of La Libertad increased by 10.1% compared to the same period of 2023, due to the agro-livestock sector before the dynamism of the agriculture subsector reflected in the expansion of the crops oriented to the foreign market and agro-industry, such as the blueberry (first producer), asparagus and grape; likewise, the livestock subsector increased, due to the greater production of fresh milk, swine and poultry. In the manufacturing sector, was registered a greater preparation of fishmeal and fish oil before the availability of raw material, linked to the second fishing season in the north-center zone; it also contributed the industry of meat processing. Likewise, the transportation sector increased influenced by the in-land transportation service, associated to the improvement of the Tambo-Cerro Blanco Road (Province Gran Chimú).

The production of Ica increased by 6.5% determined by the Construction activity
The economy of Ica grew by 6.5% in the last quarter of 2024, influenced by the favorable result of the Construction sector, driven by the physical progress of works that were executed by the national government and local government. In addition, the manufacturing sector outstood due to the growth of the industries related with the preparation of fishmeal and fish oil, tin refining in Pisco and meat processing. In mining activity increased the production of copper in the Mine Marcobre; as well as, the extraction of iron and silver. In the agro-livestock sector increased the crops of blueberries, associated to the high external demand, followed by the tomato, potato and dried lima beans; in addition, the livestock products, such as the swine, fresh milk and poultry.
Productive performance of Lima increased by 4.7% encouraged by the Manufacturing sector
The production of Lima increased by 4.7% in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to the same period of 2023, driven by manufacturing sector before the greater zinc refining, meats processing, furniture manufacturing and paper production, garment manufacturing and cotton textile manufacturing. In addition, it outstood the agro-livestock sector before the increase of its main livestock products, such as poultry, fresh milk and swine. Moreover, it grew the blueberries and chirimoya crops for the foreign market and agro-industry; besides of potato and carrot. The dynamism of transportation sector was due to air and ground transportation, associated to touristic campaigns during the non-working days, due to the event of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum.
The economy of Piura increased by 4.6% based in the agriculture activity
In the last quarter of 2024, the production of Piura increased by 4.6% compared to the fourth quarter of 2023, explained by the agro-livestock sector before the expansion of the agriculture subsector that registered greater crops destined to foreign market and agro-industry, such as grape, mango, blueberries and coffee. Transportation sector was driven by ground transportation of passengers and cargo, pipping transportation and transportation of maritime cargo of public and private use. The growth of manufacturing sector was due to the manufacture of petroleum derivates such as Diesel and preparation of petroleum derivates such as Disel and gasoline due to the high demand of domestic consumption in the automotive sector.
Mining activity influenced in the favorable result of the production of Arequipa
During the fourth quarter of 2024, the economy of the department of Arequipa increased by 2.3%, compared to the same period of 2023, registering a favorable behavior by two periods in a row, influenced by the mining activity due to the greater extraction of molybdenum and copper in Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde. Nevertheless, it was registered a contraction of minerals such as gold, silver, lead and zinc. Transportation sector was driven by ground transportation of passengers and cargo, associated to the mobilization of tourists during the holidays and the development of religious festivities; passenger and cargo air transportation; added transport of maritime freight. Meanwhile, the agro-livestock sector reduced due to the agriculture subsector by decreasing its main crops oriented to the domestic market, onion, alfalfa and wheat; and crops intended to the foreign market, such as grape, avocado and artichoke. Nevertheless, the production of potato, garlic, buttercup squash and quinoa among the most representatives, increased.
Low mining production influenced in the production of Pasco
The economy of Pasco contracted by 5.5% during the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to the same period of 2023, determined by the mining activity reflected in the lower extraction of zinc, silver and lead in the Sociedad Minera El Brocal; as well as the copper in Pan American Silver Huarón, Sociedad Minera El Brocal (mine Marcapunta Norte), Nexa Resources (mines Atacocha and El Porvenir) and Administrative Company Cerro. Meanwhile, in the construction sector decreased the physical progress of works by the side of regional government and local governments. On the other hand, the agro-livestock sector grew, contributing the livestock subsector, due to the greater production of alpaca fiber (third producer), followed by the beef cattle due to the availability of pastures and fresh milk, among others. In the agriculture subsector, it expanded its main crops such as sweet granadilla, chili peppers and annatto.
The economy of Cusco decreased by 2.7%, affected by the mining and construction activity
During the quarter under analysis the production of Cusco decreased by 2.7%, due to the mining and hydrocarbons sector due to the lower extraction of copper in the Mining Company Antapaccay; molybdenum and gold in the company Hudbay Perú; as well as, the lead and zinc in the Mining Society Andereal; meanwhile, the production of silver increased. Nevertheless, the hydrocarbons subsector grew due to the greater exploitation of natural gas in the Lots 56, 57 and 88, before the high demand in the foreign market; and liquids of natural gas in the Lots 57 and 88. In the construction sector decreased the public investment of the local government and regional government. In addition, the agro-livestock sector contracted reflected in the lower crops of banana, artichoke, cacao and corn; likewise, in the livestock products, such as fresh milk, alpaca fiber and poultry, among others.
It is worth to mention that during the year 2024 the national production increased by 3.3% compared the last year, influenced by the growth of 21 departments, outstanding Puno (12.2 %) and Lambayeque (4.7 %) driven by the growth of Agriculture activity; La Libertad (6.2 %), Lima (3.5 %) and Ancash (2.8 %) based in the Manufacturing and Agriculture sectors; Ica (3.1 %) due to the Construction and Manufacturing activities, as well as Loreto (5.2 %) due to the Mining and Hydrocarbons sectors; meanwhile, it decreased in Pasco (-2.8 %) as a consequence of the reduction of the mining activity; Amazonas (-2.4%) affected by the Construction and Agricultural sectors; as well as Ucayali (-0.8 %) due to the lower Agro-livestock and hydrocarbons subsector activity.
