Consumer prices of Lima Metropolitan area increased 0.19% in February of 2025

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the month of February of 2025, the Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area increased by 0.19%, with an accumulated variation of 0.09% to the second month and accumulated variation of 1.48% in the last twelve months (March 2024 - February 2025).
In the technical report Variation of the Price Indicators of the Economy is stated that the behavior of the prices was influenced by the increase registered in the consumer divisions: Restaurants and Hotels (0.39%), Education (0.37%), Recreation and Culture (0.36%), Goods and Different Services (0.25%), Furniture, Articles for Household and Routine Household Maintenance(0.25%), Clothing Items and Footwear (0.21%), Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (0.19%), Transportation (0.17%), Communications (0.04%) and Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics (0.04%).
On the other hand, the prices of Accommodation, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (-0.29%) and Health (-0.01%) divisions decreased.
The increase in Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages was mainly based, in the increase of prices of vegetables, legumes including potato and other tubers (1.8%) such as, hot pepper (79.0%), celery (31.8%), leek (11.6%), whole garlic (6.9%), yucca (6.2%), onion head (4.5%), olluco (4.3%), yellow potato (3.9%), carrot (3.0%), tomato (2.9%) and chopped vegetables (2.6%). In addition, the prices of milk, cheese and eggs increased (1.3%) such as chicken eggs (4.1%); likewise, fruits (1.1%) such as orange juice (18.5%), papaya (14.8%), sweet granadilla (9.0%), cucumber (8.2%), strawberry (7.5%), blueberries (6.0%) and imported apple (4.7%).
Likewise, it increased the prices of oil and fats (1.0%) such as olive oil (5.6%) and packaged vegetable oil (0.5%); coffee, tea and cacao (0.9%) such as instant coffee (1.0%) and chocolate product (0.9%); mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit and legumes juices (0.3%) such as carbonated beverages (0.6%); bread and cereals (0.3%) due to the greater prices of whole quinoa (2.0%), packaged rice (1.4%), short pasta (0.7%) and long pasta (0.3%), rice in bulk (0.5%) and sweet pastries (0.2%).
Meanwhile, it decreased the prices of fishes and seafood (-2.6%) such as mackerel (-16.0%), horse mackerel (-7.2%), Bonito fish (-5.1%) and Lisa fish (-3.4%); and meat (-1.8%) such as eviscerated chicken (-4.9%), chicken cuts: wings (-2.9%), leg (-2.0%) and breast (-1.1%); also breaded chicken (-1.2%), and chicken whole gutted (-1.1%).
In the Restaurants and Hotels division registered an increase of prices in the service of beverages in restaurants and similar premises (0.6%) such as natural refreshments (0.9%), carbonated beverages (0.6%), served beer (0.6%) and fruit smoothie (0.4%). In addition, the food service in restaurants and similar premises (0.3%) such as sandwiches (0.9%), Chaufa rice (0.7%), ceviche (0.4%), menu in restaurants (0.3%), breakfast (0.3%), grilled meats (0.3%) and grilled chicken (0.1%).
The increase of prices in the Education division is based in the greater prices in the secondary education level (0.5%) such as payments for other concepts in secondary education level (4.1%) and the expense in the registration process in non-state education (3.9%); likewise, the early childhood education and primary education level (0.4%) such as the expense in the registration process of non-state education levels such as early childhood (3.8%) and primary (2.5%) education level; and payments for other concepts such as primary (3.4%) and early-childhood (2.5%) education level.
In addition, it increased the prices of the post-secondary, non-tertiary education level (0.3%) due to the increase in the tuition of technical-productive education (0.2%); and the tertiary education level (0.3%) due to expense in the registration process of non-state undergraduate university (5.8%).
In the Transportation division increased the prices of transportation of passengers by air (3.5%) such as the domestic air ticket (15.8%); interprovince omnibus fare (1.0%); and fuels for vehicles (0.6%) such as Diesel petroleum (3.0%), liquefied petroleum gas for vehicle (2.4%), gasohol (0.4%) and vehicular natural gas (0.2%).
Products with greater variation
During the second month of the year, from the 586 products that are part of the family basket, 323 increased the price, 124 decreased their price and 139 products did not registered variation. Those that registered the greater increase in prices were: hot pepper (79.03%), celery (31.78%), orange juice (18.49%), domestic air ticket (15.76%), papaya (14.75%), leek (11.56%), sweet granadilla (8.96%) and Parrot fish (8.92%).
Meanwhile, the products with downward prices were: mackerel (-16.01%), passion fruit (-12.77%), white grape (-11.09%), pickle (-10.14%), grounded rocoto hot pepper (-8.39%), corn (-7.86%), coriander (-7.32%) and horse mackerel (-7.22%).
Products with greater incidence in the monthly result
The variation of the Consumer Price Index of the month of February of 2025, was mainly influenced due to the increase observed in the Restaurants and Hotels divisions due to the increase in the food and beverage service in restaurants, Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages due to the increase in vegetables, season fruits, eggs and coffee, attenuated by the decrease of prices in poultry and fish; Education by the greater prices in the early-childhood, primary, secondary and tertiary education level; transportation by the increase of prices in transportation of passengers by air, and fuels for vehicles. It is worth to mention that these four consumption divisions, contributed together with more than the 86% to the general index.
Consumer prices without considering foods and energy increased 0.19% in February of 2025
The variation of Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area, without considering foods and energy (underlying inflation) in February of 2025 increased by 0.19%.
Consumer prices at national level increased 0.12%
In February of 2025, the Consumer Price Index at National Level increased 0.12%, with an accumulated variation of 0.04% as of the second month of the current year and that of the last twelve months (March 2024-February 2025) reached 1.51%. The monthly result was associated to the increase of prices of the divisions: Recreation and Culture (0.41%), Education (0.40%), Restaurants and Hotels (0.39%), Goods and Different Services (0.26%), Transportation (0.24%), Clothing Items and Footwear (0.19%), Furniture, Articles for Household and Routine Household Maintenance (0.19%), Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (0.12%), Health (0.09%) and Communications (0.03%). On the other hand, the prices of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages divisions (-0.20%) and Accommodation, Water, Electricity and Gas divisions (-0.15%) decreased.
Variation of prices by cities
During the month under analysis, eleven cities where the Consumer Price Index is calculated registered increase in their prices. The highest variations were observed in the cities of Puno (0.62%), Tacna (0.19%), Lima Metropolitan area (0.19%), Piura (0.17%), Arequipa (0.16%) and Cajamarca (0.14%). Meanwhile, fifteen cities showed reduction of prices, outstanding Moyobamba and Huaraz (-0.47%) each one, Cerro de Pasco (-0.39%), Chimbote (-0.30%), Huánuco and Huancavelica (-0.25%) each one.
Wholesale prices at national level decreased 0.36%
During the month of February of 2025, the Wholesale Price Index decreased by 0.36%, with an accumulated variation of -0.26% and the annualized (March 2024 – February 2025) was of -1.23%. This result was a product of the lower prices in domestic goods: Manufacture (plastic bags, PVC compounds, industrial oil, general use and energy cables, metal containers, poultry, sugar, canned fish, industrial wheat flour and long pasta noodles); Fishing (mackerel, horse mackerel, Bonito fish, hake and Lisa fish); and livestock (live chicken, ovine cattle and live hen); nevertheless, it increased the prices in agriculture goods (orange, onions, yucca, tomato, green peas, olluco, wheat, banana and coffee beans). Likewise, the prices of imported goods drop, Manufacture (polyester fibre, yarn of synthetic staple fibers, oil-cakes, automobiles, polypropylene resins, steel sheets, pneumatics for truck, steel sheets, pneumatics for trucks, cyanide, front-end loaders); and Agriculture (Cotton, not carded and wheat).
Prices of machinery and equipment decreased 0.82%
During the month under analysis, the Price Index of Machinery and Equipment decreased by 0.82% with an accumulated variation at the second month of the year of -0.66% and in the last twelve months reached -0.78%. This result was influenced by the lower US dollar exchange rate, which reflected in the prices of imported capital goods, such as machinery and equipment for agriculture (tractors and shovels); industry (industrial sewing machines, portable computers, shovel loaders and bulldozers); transportation (automotive vehicles for transportation of persons, road tractor for semi-trailer and oil filters); and other machinery (different electricity meters and electro-domestic devices). Likewise, it decreased the prices of the national capital goods: other machinery (hospital beds and nets for a catch); industry (metallic tanks, electrical transformers and bombs for liquids); and transportation (car bodies and moto-taxis); nevertheless, the agriculture machine, did not registered variation.
Prices of construction materials decreased 0.31%
During February of 2025, the Price Index of Construction Materials in Lima Metropolitan area decreased by 0.31% and in the accumulated of the first two months of the year reached -0.21%; and in the last twelve months (March 2024-February 2025) decreased by 1,32%. This result was based in the behavior of seven of the ten groups that are part of this indicator: metallics (LAC steel tubes, construction rods, zinc corrugated sheets and LAC steel sheets, influencing the dollar); glasses (tempered and primary); binders (Portland cement type I); tubes and plastic accessories (PVC accessories for electricity, tanks for water, PVC tubes for drainage and electricity); aggregates (concrete and stone); tiles and mosaics (floor and wall coverings); and power supplies (energy cables, fixed and telephone installations). On the other hand, showed an increase of prices, bricks (for roof brick, king kong and pandereta brick); woods (capirona, tornillo and cachimbo); and concrete structures (ready-mix concrete and fibre-based board flat sheets).
