Employed population of the country reached 17 million 322 thousand 900 persons in 2024

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that in 2024, the employed population of the country reached 17 million 322 thousand 900 persons, increased by 0.8% (143 thousand 100 persons), compared to 2023. This was informed in the technical report Peru: Indicators of the labor market at national level and of 27 cities, prepared with the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN).
The employed population increased by 1.6% (214 thousand) in urban area; meanwhile, it decreased by 2.1% (70 thousand 900) in the rural area. According to sex, the male employed population increased by 0.9% (86 thousand) and the female employed population increased by 0.8% (57 thousand 100).
The employed population of 45 years of age and older increased by 3.8%
During the year 2024, the employed population of 45 years of age and older grew by 3.8% (240 thousand 100); meanwhile, the employment reduced by 3.9% (-100 thousand) in the group of 14 to 24 years of age. On the other hand, the population of 25 to 44 years of age did not register variation.
The employment population with university superior education level grew by 2.9%
The INEI informed that the employed population with university superior education level increased by 2.9% (102 thousand 700), followed by the population with non-university superior education level increased by 0.9% (27 thousand) and with secondary education level increased by 0.2% (12 thousand 100). Meanwhile, the population with primary education or lower education level did not register variation.
The employment increased 4.5% in the companies of 11 to 50 employees
In 2024, the employed population increased by 4.5% (55 thousand) in companies of 11 to 50 employees and increased by 1.1% (38 thousand 100) in companies of 51 and more employees. In a lower proportion increased by 0.4% (50 thousand) in companies of 1 to 10 employees.
The Manufacturing and Commerce activity led the creation of employment
The employed population in Manufacturing and Commerce increased by 4.6% and by 2.8%, respectively; also, the employed population grew by 1.9% in Construction and by 0.1%. in Services. Nevertheless, it decreased by 1.1%.in Agriculture/Fishing/Mining.
Unemployment rate was of 5.6%
In 2024, the unemployment rate placed in 5.6% and affected women (6.6%) in a greater measure greater than men (4.7%); it affected in young people of 14 to 24 years of age (11.5%) and, between those that have university education level (7.2%).
Average monthly income coming from work increased by 5.5%
In 2024, the average monthly income coming from work placed in 1,765.90 Soles and increased by 5.5% (91.50 Soles), compared to the year 2023. The income in the male population grew by 4.9% and the female income grew by 6.3%.
The employed population increased in 18 cities
During 2024, in 18 cities of Peru grew the employed population, among those cities that outstood were Moquegua (8.2%), Huancavelica (4.7%), Lima Metropolitan area and the Constitutional Province of Callao (4.6%) and Cusco (4,2%); meanwhile, in seven (7) cities decreased the employed population, mainly in Cerro de Pasco (-6.5%), followed by Huaraz (-2.7%), Tumbes (-2.4%), Huancayo (-2.0%) and Huánuco (-1.4%).
Three cities registered informality rates higher than 70%
The INEI informed that, in 2024, the greater informal employment rates were registered in the cities of Juliaca (83.4%), Pucallpa (72.9%) and Ayacucho (72.0%). On the other hand, the lower rates were registered in Moquegua (54.1%), Arequipa (55.7%), as well as in Lima Metropolitan area and Constitutional Province of Callao (56.9%).
The greater unemployment rates were registered in three cities
In the cities of Huancavelica (12.0%), Cajamarca (11.3%) and Moquegua (10.7%) were registered the greater unemployment rates, during the year 2024. On the other hand, the lower rates were registered in Moyobamba (4.3%), Tarapoto (4.4%) and Trujillo (4.5%).
Employed population of the country increased by 1.8% during the fourth quarter of 2024
During the fourth quarter of the year 2024, the employed population of the country increased by 1.8% (303 thousand 100) and reached 17 million 498 thousand 400 persons. According to residence area, in the urban area grew by 2.1% (295 thousand 400) and in the rural area grew by 0.2% (7 thousand 700). By sex, the male employed population increased by 2.1% (198 thousand 200) and the female employed population increased by 1.4% (104 thousand 900).
Employed population increased in all age groups
During the last quarter of 2024, the employed population of 45 years of age and older grew by 3.9% (254 thousand 200), the young population of 14 to 24 years of age grew by 0.8% (18 thousand 400) and in the group of 25 to 44 years of age grew by 0.4% (30 thousand 500).
Employed population in companies of 11 to 50 employees increased in 9.9%
The INEI informed that during the fourth quarter of 2024, the employed population in companies of 11 to 50 employees was higher in 9.9% (118 thousand 600), followed by the companies of 51 to more employees in 2.3% (80 thousand 700) and in establishments of 1 to 10 employees in 0.8% (103 thousand 800).
The employment in Construction increased by 10.3%
During the last quarter of 2024, the employed population in Construction increased by 10.3%, Agriculture/Fishing/Mining increased by 3.6%, Manufacture increased by 3.4%, Commerce increased by 0.5%. On the other hand, in Services decreased by 0.3%.
Unemployment rate was of 4.7%
During the fourth quarter of 2024, the unemployment rate placed in 4.7%. Affecting women in a greater measure (5.6%), and young people of 14 to 24 years of age (10.7%) and those that have university superior education level (6.7%).
