INEI creates Statistical Laboratory - LabStat and is at the forefront of the National Statistical Organizations of the region

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that for the first time, Peru will have a Statistical Laboratory – LabStat, which will make it place at the forefront of the National Statistical Organizations (NSO) of the region.

This proposal is based in the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics of the United Nations. “Official Statistics are indispensable element in the information system of a democratic society and provide the government, the economy and general public data about the economic, demographic, social and environmental situation”.

Pandemic generated new needs in different fields across the world and statistic was not an exemption. The generation of statistics supported in AI offers new opportunities of automatization, efficiency and innovation, through texts, images and similar videos to humans that allows to statistical organizations to process unstructured data, optimizing the work-flows and transforming the management and dissemination of data.

LabStat of the INEI Peru, created through Director’s Resolution N° 029-2025-INEI, will be in charge of the National School of Statistics and Informatics of the INEI and shall be composed by school's first graduating class of the University Extension Program in Data Science, developed in the last quarter of 2024.

The UEP graduates had been trained in data science, statistics and programming, capable of mastering languages such as Python, R, SQL, Machine Learning and Deep Learning and other information technology tools.

Labstat Peru will allow the INEI, the SEN and the country to have new solutions in their statistical productive processes and a greater use of the AI and the Big Data in support of the decision-making of those that are in charge of the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies specially, and of users in general.
