Consumer prices of Lima Metropolitan area decreased 0.09% during the month of January of 2025

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the first month of the current year, the Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area registered a slight decrease of 0.09%, with an annual variation (February 2024-January 2025) of 1.85%.

In the technical report Variation of the Price Indicators of the Economy is stated that the monthly result was mainly associated to lower prices of the consumer divisions: Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.33%) and Transportation (-0.99%). Nevertheless, there were registered increase of prices in the following divisions Restaurants and Hotels (0.36%), Accommodation, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (0.15%), Goods and Different Services (0.19%), Furniture, Articles for Household and Routine Household Maintenance(0.19%), Recreation and Culture (0.10%), Beverages, Alcoholics, Tobacco and Narcotics (0.09%), Communications (0.06%), Education (0.05%) and Health (0.02%).

The reduction of prices that was registered in Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages is based in the decrease of the following products meat (-4.6%) such as eviscerated chicken (-10.5%), chicken giblets (-6.8%), chicken cuts: wings (-6.8%), leg (-5.7%), breast (-5.4%) and breaded chicken (-4.7%). Likewise, the prices of other food products decreased (-1.8%) such as coriander (-20.3%); and milk, cheese and eggs (-0.7%), where chicken eggs registered a decrease in its price (-2.7%).

On the other hand, it increased the prices of fruits (3.1%) such as sweet granadilla (31.2%), papaya (14.4%), orange for juice (10.9%), mango (7.5%), strawberry (5.4%), strong avocado (3.8%), pineapple (1.8%) and lemon (1.2%). Likewise, vegetables, legumes including the potato and other tubers (2.4%) such as green onion (17.5%), olluco (15.7%), celery (15.5%), yucca (10.7%), spinach (10.5%), yellow potato (10.2%), escabeche yellow hot pepper (9.4%), bell pepper (9.4%), green peas (8.7%), beet (7.2%), cucumber (6.5%), whole garlic (6.1%), carrot (5.3%) and Huayro potato (4.6%).

Likewise, it increased the prices of fishes and seafoods (1.7%), such as sea bass (20.9%), Bonito fish (8.9%) and Parrot fish (8.0%); also, coffee, tea and cacao (1.0%) such as chocolate product (2.9%) and instant coffee (0.5%); mineral water, soft drinks, fruit and legume juice (0.4%) such as, carbonated table water (0.5%) and carbonated beverages (0.3%); as well as bread and cereals (0.4%) due to the increase observed in dried corn (3.1%), rice in bulk (0.7%), salty pies (0.7%), sweet pastries (0.5%), dried noodles of long pasta (0.6%) and packaged rice (0.5%).

In the Transportation division reduced the prices of passengers’ transportation by air (-7.9%) such as domestic (-21.6%) and international airline ticket (-2.0%); transportation of passengers by road (-1.0%) such as interprovince omnibus fare (-15.4%), fares in taxi (-1.8%) and moto-taxi (-0.9%).

Meanwhile, it increased the prices of fuels for vehicles (1.1%) such as gasohol (1.3%), liquefied petroleum gas for vehicle (1.0%) and vehicular natural gas (0.2%); meanwhile it reduced the price of diesel petroleum (-0.3%).

The greater prices of the Restaurants and Hotels division are based in the increase of the food service in restaurants (0.4%) due to the increase of Creole and regional plates (1.0%), Chifa plates (0.5%), menu in restaurants (0.4%), ceviche (0.4%), sandwiches (0.3%) and grilled chicken (0.3%); and due to the increase in the service of beverages in restaurants and similar premises (0.3%) due to greater prices of served beer (0.5%) and blended fruit juice (0.2%).

On the other hand, the increase in Goods and Different Services is based in the increase of prices in the beauty parlors and establishments of personal care (0.4%) such as hair cut for men (0.4%), esthetic care of hands and feet (0.4%) and hair dyes (0.4%); and other devices, articles and products for personal care attention (0.2%) due to the increase of toilet articles for babies (0.8%) cologne for women (0.5%), deodorants (0.3%) and toilet soap (0.3%).

Products with greater variation
During the month of January of 2025, of the 586 products that make up the family basket, 311 increased their price, 106 decrease their price and 169 products did not registered variation. Those that registered a greater increase were: sweet granadilla (31,24%), corvina (20,91%), green onion (17,46%), olluco (15,74%), celery (15,47%), papaya (14,39%), juice orange (10,88%) and yucca (10,71%). On the other hand, the products with decrease in the prices were domestic airline ticket (-21.56%), coriander (-20,33%), white grape (-16,44%), interprovince omnibus fare (-15.44%), horse mackerel (-12.50%), eviscerated chicken (-10,54%), Israel apple (-8,23%) and chicken wings (-6,78%).

Products with high incidence in the monthly result
The variation of the Consumer Price Index of the month of January of 2025, was mainly influenced, the lower prices in some foods such as eviscerated chicken and its cuts, as well as, the decrease of prices of the domestic airline ticket, interprovince omnibus fare and taxi fare that together negatively contributed in 0.339 percentage points to the monthly result. On the other hand, the prices of sweet granadilla, papaya, yellow potato, Bonito fish and menu in restaurants increased.

Consumer prices without considering foods and energy decreased 0.15% in January of 2025
The variation of the Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area, without considering foods and energy (underlying inflation) in January of 2025 decreased by 0.15%.

Consumer prices at national level reduced 0.08%
During the first month of 2025, the Consumer Price Index at National Level decreased 0.08% and in the last twelve months reached 1.80%. This result answers to the lower prices of the Transportation (-0,84%) and Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.34%) divisions. On the other hand, it increased in the divisions Restaurants and Hotels (0.33%), Accommodation, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (0.19%), Goods and Different Services (0.15%), Furniture, Articles for Household (0.13%), Recreation and Culture (0.11%), Clothing Items and Footwear (0.05%), Health (0.05%), Education (0.04%), Communications (0.04%) and Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (0.04%) increased.

Variation of prices by cities
During the month under analysis, seventeen out of twenty-six cities where the Consumer Price Index registered negative results. The lowest variations were registered in the cities of Cerro de Pasco (-0.68%), Tarapoto (-0.53%), Huánuco (-0.48%), Pucallpa (-0.40%) and Huaraz (-0.40%). Meanwhile, the cities with greater increase of prices were: Moquegua (0.38%), Tumbes (0.29%), Ayacucho (0.26%) and Ica (0.24%).

Wholesale prices at national level increased 0.10%
During the month of January of 2025, the Wholesale Price Index increased by 0.10%, with an annual variation (February 2024 – January 2025) of -0.56%. This result was a result of the increase observed in the prices of national goods: manufactured (gasohol, diesel oil, industrial oil, liquid petroleum gas, cotton fiber fabrics, PVC tubes, construction rods, plastic containers, soy refined oil, canned fish in fillets and cement); agriculture (green peas, tomato, olluco, orange, mandarin, avocado, coffee in grain and paddy rice); and fishing (Parrot fish, Cachema fish, hake and mullet); nevertheless the prices of livestock goods (chicken and live hen, eggs, cattle: sheep and bovine).

Likewise, the prices of imported products of Manufacturing increased (crude oil soy, diesel oil, female undergarments, conveyor belts, PVC resins, construction rods, NP binary fertilizers, automobiles and front-end loaders). Meanwhile, it was observed negative variations in agricultural products (apple, lentils, not carded cotton and wheat).

Prices of machinery and equipment grew 0.16%
During the month under analysis, the Price Index of Machinery and Equipment increased by 0.16% and in the last twelve months reached 2.25%. This behavior was based in the increase of prices of domestic capital goods: machinery for the industry (electric boards, electric transformers, luminaires and metallic tanks); transportation (radiators for automotive vehicle and car bodies); other machinery and equipment (clinic beds); and agriculture machinery (drinker lines for birds).

Likewise, the prices of imported capital goods increased, it was also registered an increase of prices in the machinery for agriculture (agriculture tractors); and industry (electricity control panels, bulldozers, wheel loaders and telephone exchanges); nevertheless, the machinery for transportation showed lower prices (pick-up trucks, vehicles for transportation of goods and road tractor for semi-trailer).

Prices of construction materials increased 0.10%
During January of 2025, the Price Index of Construction Materials in Lima Metropolitan area grew 0.10%; nevertheless, in the las twelve months (February 2024-January 2025) decreased by 0.53%. This result was based in the increase of prices of five of the ten groups that make up the indicator: metallics (construction rods, LAC steel sheets, wire rod and nails), due to the increase of steel; glasses (glasses: templated and primary); concrete structures (fiber corrugated sheets); woods (Capirona); tubes and plastic accessories (tubes for water, PVC accessories for water and sewerage).

On the other hand, the prices of the groups, electric supplies decreased (cables: for energy, general use and fixed installations); bricks (Pandereta brick, King Kong brick and brick for roof); majolica and tiles (floor coverings); and binders (type I Portland cement). Meanwhile, the group of aggregates (stone) did not registered variation.
