Production of potable water in Lima Metropolitan area decreased 0.5% in December of 2024

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that according to the information provided by the Service of Potable Water and Sewerage Service of Lima (SEDAPAL), during the month of December of 2024, the production of potable water reached 68 million 681 thousand cubic meters, which represented a decrease of 0.5% compared to the same month of 2023.
Rimac and Chillon Rivers flow increase
According with the data reached by the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (SENAMHI), during the month of December of 2024, the average flow of Rimac River reached 38.03 m3/s, greater amount in 16.9% and 36.1% compared to the same month of 2023, and its historic average, respectively.

In the technical report Environmental Statistics is also stated that the average flow of Chillon River totalized 8.24 m3/s, a greater figure in 2.7% and 54.9% compared to the month of December of 2023 and its historic average, respectively.
The flow of the North Pacific rivers reduces
During the month under analysis, the flow of the North Pacific rivers registered a decrease in their flows. In the case of the Tumbes River totalized 38.86 m3/s which represented a reduction of 58.4% and 21.4% compared to the registered in the month of December of 2023 and to its historic average, respectively. Meanwhile, the flow of Chira River (51.54 m3/s) decreased by 38.7% compared to the same month of the last year and greater than 2.6% compared to its historic average, respectively.
During the month under analysis, the flow of the North Pacific rivers registered a decrease in their flows. In the case of the Tumbes River totalized 38.86 m3/s which represented a reduction of 58.4% and 21.4% compared to the registered in the month of December of 2023 and to its historic average, respectively. Meanwhile, the flow of Chira River (51.54 m3/s) decreased by 38.7% compared to the same month of the last year and greater than 2.6% compared to its historic average, respectively.
On the other hand, the flow of Jequetepeque River reached 21.11 m3/s lower in 29.3% compared to the month of December of the last year and higher in 7.5% compared to its historic average. On the other hand, the flow of Calvas River totalized 19.21 m3/s, which represented a growth 13.9% compared to the month of December of 2023 and lower than 4.4% compared to historic average.
Rainfalls reduce in the center area of the Pacific watershed
During the month of December of 2024 and according to the information submitted by the SENAMHI, in Matucana station, the average of rainfalls registered in the center area of the Pacific Ocean watershed was of 85.20 millimeters, which meant an increase of 108.3% compared to its historic average (40.90 mm) and an increase of 24.38% compared to the month of December of 2023 (68.5 mm).
Tacna, Puno and Arequipa registered the lowest temperatures
During the month of December of 2024 and according to the monitoring of 14 SENAMHI stations, the lowest temperatures registered in the stations placed in the departments Tacna, Puno, Junín and Arequipa.
In the department of Tacna, in the stations of Chuapalca (-11,5 °C) and Bocatoma (-6,5 °C); in Puno in the stations of Mazo Cruz (-9.8 °C), Ananea (-5.0 °C), Crucero Alto (-4.8 °C), Cojata (-4.2 °C), Macusani (-4.0 °C), Santa Rosa (-1.8 °C) and Desaguadero (-1.6 °C); and in the department of Arequipa, in the stations of Pillones (-7.2 °C), Imata (-6.0 °C), Salinas (-4.2 °C) and Tisco (-2,9 °C). In addition, in the department of Junin, in the station of Laive (-3.1 °C).
Emergencies at national level increased 34.6%
During the month of December of 2024 and according to the information of the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI), were registered 618 emergencies at national level, which meant an increase of 34.6% compared to the same month of 2023. Emergencies left 1,541 affected people, 3,461 affected households, 143 households destroyed and 21 hectares of crops destroyed.
The greater quantity of emergencies were registered in Cusco (133), Piura (49), Ayacucho (45), Lima (43), Ancash (43), Apurímac (41), Huancavelica (37), Ucayali and Cajamarca (32 in each one), Huánuco (31), Amazonas (18), San Martín (17), La Libertad (14), Puno (13), Pasco (12), Loreto and Arequipa (9 in each one), Junín, Lambayeque and Tumbes (8 in each one), Ica (6); Moquegua (4); Tacna (3); Callao (2) and Madre de Dios (1).
The emergencies were mainly caused by: heavy rains (197), urban and industrial fires (147), strong winds (117), low temperatures (31), flooding (26), landslide (24), electrical storm (20), collapse of hill (19), erosion (14), huayco (9), accident of transportation by river (5), forest fire (4), tidal wave (3), drought and contamination (1 in each case).
