Lima exceeds 10 million 400 thousand inhabitants

On the occasion of the 490 anniversary of the foundation of Lima [1], known as the "La Ciudad de los Reyes" (The City of the Kings), the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), informed that the population of Lima Metropolitan area, with its 43 districts, reaches 10 million 432 thousand 133 inhabitants and represents the 30.4% of the total population of the country (34 million 350 thousand 244), according to the projections of population as of June 30 of the current year.
According to sex, 52.3% of the population are women (5 million 455 thousand 025) and 47.7% are men (4 million 977 thousand 108). By age it is observed that the population of 15 to 39 years of age represents the 36.5%, those that are between 40 to 59 years of age represents the 27.1%, those that are between 0 to 14 years of age reach the 18.7% and older adults of 60 years of age and older reach the 17.6% of the national population.
San Juan de Lurigancho concentrates the 12.3% of the population of Lima
As of 2025, the district with greater population in Lima continues to be San Juan de Lurigancho with 1 million 282 thousand 635 inhabitants and concentrates the 12.3% of the population of the capital city. Among the most populous districts of Lima are San Martín de Porres (802 thousand 774), Ate (743 thousand 517), Comas (600 thousand 307), Villa María del Triunfo (462 thousand 141), Carabayllo (458 thousand 341), Villa El Salvador (442 thousand 292), Santiago de Surco (437 thousand 028), Puente Piedra (435 thousand 888) and San Juan de Miraflores (433 thousand 709). It is worth to mention that the mentioned districts concentrate the 58.5% of the population of Lima.
On the other hand, the ten districts with lower number of inhabitants in Lima Metropolitan area Santa María del Mar, Punta Negra, San Bartolo, Pucusana, Punta Hermosa, Barranco, Cieneguilla, Chaclacayo, Santa Rosa and San Luis, that together represent the 2.8% of the population of capital city.
The district of Breña has more inhabitants per square kilometer
In the city of Lima the population density reaches 3,986.40 persons per square kilometer and per districts it is observed that Breña is the one that has the higher population density with 30,355.90 inhab./km2, followed by Surquillo 30,348.0 inhab./km2. Meanwhile, the districts with lower population density are Punta Negra with 73.80 inhab./km2, Santa María del Mar with 133.90 inhab./km2, Cieneguilla with174.00 inhab./km2, Punta Hermosa with 211.60 inhab./km2 and San Bartolo with 223.80 inhab./km2.
In 2024 more than 99 thousand births were registered in the city of Lima
During the year 2024 and according to the information of the Ministry of Health, in the city of Lima were registered 99 thousand 203 births, of which, 23 thousand 250 occurred in the district of Lima; and among the districts with greater number of certified births in line were Villa El Salvador with 6 thousand 618, Ate with 5 thousand 807, Jesús María 5 thousand 446, Miraflores with 5 thousand 426 and Comas with 4 thousand 841 births.
According to the month of birth, in March there was reported the greater number, with 9 thousand 4, followed by the months of April with 8 thousand 700, May with 8 thousand 696, January with 8 thousand 567 and July with 8 thousand 501 births.
San Juan de Lurigancho registered the greater number of marriages
During the year 2023 and according the information provided by the National Registry of Identification and Legal Status (RENIEC) in the city of Lima were reported 21 thousand 929 marriages, being the district of San Juan de Lurigancho which registered a greater number of marriages celebrated with 1 thousand 743; followed by Santiago de Surco (1 thousand 631), Comas (1 thousand 352), San Juan de Miraflores (1 thousand 79), San Martín de Porres (889), Puente Piedra (846) and Los Olivos (824).
According to the month of celebration, in September (2 thousand 448) were registered the greater number of marriages; meanwhile, in January were registered the lower number (1 thousand 383).
In almost 5 million is estimated the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area
According to the results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN) of the year 2024, the employed population of Lima Metropolitan area reached 4 million 909 thousand 900 persons, of which, 53.9% are men and 46.1% are women. By age groups, 12.8% are young people of 14 to 24 years of age, 49.0% are between 25 to 44 years of age and 38.2% are people of 45 years of age and older.
By activity branch, 55.7% of those that work are engaged in Services 22.3% Commerce, 13.5% Manufacturing, 7.3% Construction activities and 1.2% in other activity.
47.9% of the population of 15 years of age and older of Lima has secondary education level
In the city of Lima and according to the National Household Survey (ENAHO), 47.9% of the population of 15 years of age and older have secondary education level, 23.3% have university superior education level, 17.5% have non-university superior education level and 11.3% have primary or lower education level.
78 out of 100 household have access to the Internet service
The ENAHO results, point out that 77.6% of the households of Lima have access to the Internet service. Considering the access to other Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), it is estimated that in 97.5% of the households at least one member has cellphone, 47.9% of the households has at least one computer and 44.5% of the households have access to cable television.
More than 91.0% of the households of Lima have basic services
As of the year 2023, and according to the National Survey of Budgetary Programs (ENAPRES), 94.3% access to the service of water by public network, 91.7% has sewerage service or other ways of sanitary disposal and 97.9% of the households has access to electric energy service through public network.
