Use of the Internet reached 80.2% of the population of 6 years old and older in the third quarter of 2024

During the third quarter of 2024, 80.2% of the country’s population of 6 years old and older used the Internet, increasing in 1.1 percentage points, compared to the same quarter of 2023 (79.1%). This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report Statistics of Information and Communication Technologies in the Households, prepared with the results of the National Household Survey (ENAHO).
Likewise, it informed that 56.1% of the population of the rural area accessed to this service, figure higher in 2.7 percentage points, compared to the 53.4% reached in the third quarter of 2023. In addition, it grew in 0.8 percentage point in the res turban area by going from 82.1% to 82.9% and in 0.5 percentage point in Lima Metropolitan area by going from 89.4% to 89.9%.
On the other hand, pointed out that 81.6% of men use of the Internet, meanwhile that 78.7% of women access to this service, registering a difference of 2.9 percentage points in favor of men.
The majority of Internet users are between 19 and 40 years old
During the quarter under analysis, 96.5% of the population of 19 to 24 years of age and 92.6% of the group of 25 to 40 years of age was the greater users of Internet, followed by the 91.0% of those that are in the group of 12 to 18 years old, 80.8% of 41 to 59 years old, 62.7% of the population of 6 to 11 years old and 47.0% of the older adults of 60 years old and older.
The age group that increased the use of the Internet is the population of 60 years old and older (3.2 percentage points), those that are 41 to 59 years old (2.9 percentage points) and in the group of 25 to 40 years old (0.8 percentage point); compared to the same quarter of the year 2023.
Population with higher education level accessed in greater proportion to the Internet
98.4% and 97.1% of the population with university and non-university superior education level, used in greater proportion the Internet services; registering increases of 0.4 and 0.8 percentage point, respectively.
Likewise, the Internet user population with primary or lower education level increased in 1.6 percentage points by going from 51.8% to 53.4% and that population with secondary education level in 0.5 percentage point, by going from 88.1% to 88.6%, compared to the third quarter of the year 2023.
90.0% of the population of 6 years old and older that used the Internet do it through a cellphone
During the third quarter of the year 2024, 90.0% of the population of 6-year-old and older that used the Internet, do it through their cellphone (it has been considered; cellphone with and without data plan).
By residence area, 92.3% of the Internet user population living in Lima Metropolitan area accessed through a cellphone, as well as, 89.5% of the rural area and 88.4% of the urban rest area. Compared to the same quarter of the year 2023, decreased in Lima Metropolitan area in 1.5 percentage points, in the rest urban and in rural area in 0.5 percentage point, in both cases.
58.3% of the households of the country have Internet connection
During the quarter July-August-September of 2024, 58.3% of households of the country have the Internet service. By residence area, the greater coverage was registered in Lima Metropolitan area (78.7%), followed by the rest urban area (59.9%) and by the households in the rural area (21.7%).
94.9% of the households of the country have at least one member with cellphone.
The results of the National Household Survey revealed that in 94.9% of the country’s households there is at least a member with cellphone and by comparing to the same quarter of 2023, the coverage of households that has cellular mobile telephony did not register a significant variation.
According to residence area, it was observed a greater coverage in Lima Metropolitan area with 97.7%, followed by the rest urban area with 96.5% and the rural area with 86.6%.
Access to cable television reached 30.7% of the country’s households
During the quarter under analysis, 30.7% of the country’s households accessed to cable television. By residence area 42.1% of the households of Lima Metropolitan area had cable television, 31.2% in the case of the rest urban area and 11.0% in the case of the rural area.
