Productive activity grew in 21 departments during the third quarter of 2024

A total of 21 departments, in the third quarter of 2024, registered positive results in the development of its economy. This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the Technical Report “Indicator of the Departmental Productive Activity”; it also stated that 11 regions registered higher rates compared to the growth of the country’s economy (3.8%) and concentrated together the 55.6% of the total of the national production.


The 11 departments that registered the highest growths were: Huancavelica (9.1%), Huánuco (7.8%) and Loreto (6.9%) due to the favorable development of electricity, mining and hydrocarbons and construction sectors. Followed by Junin (7.9%) and Tumbes (6.7%), based in the progress of mining and hydrocarbons, constructions and agriculture activities. Likewise, dynamism was registered in Amazonas (7.1%) and Madre de Dios (4.2%) was determined by the construction and transportation sectors. The performance of Lambayeque (7.0%) was explained by the agriculture, transportation and telecommunication activities. In the case of Tacna (5.9%) and Apurímac (5.4%) influenced by the mining, commerce and electricity sectors. And in the case of Lima (4.7%) was driven by the manufacturing, construction and commerce activities.
On the other hand, three regions registered a negative behavior, these were: Moquegua (-4.0%) due to the reduction of the electricity, mining and construction sectors; Pasco (-2.6%), before the lower mining activity; and Ucayali (-0.9%) due to the contraction of agriculture, mining and hydrocarbons sectors.


Production of Huancavelica grew in 9.1% driven by the progress of electricity subsector
During the third quarter of 2024, the productive activity of Huancavelica grew in 9.1% and added five continuous periods of positive behavior, driven by the electricity subsector before the greater generation of electricity energy in following the hydraulic power stations Mantaro (Antúnez de Mayolo), Cerro del Águila and Restitución; this region is the second producer of this service. The favorable performance of the Mining activity was based by the increase of the extraction of copper performed by the company Operadores Concentrados Peruanos in the mine Cobriza. In addition, the gold production increased in the Company of Minas Buenaventura; followed by lead, zinc and silver. The Transportation sector was influenced by the transportation service by road of passengers before the transfer of visitors during the holidays established during the quarter under study.


The productive activity of Junin increased in 7.9% driven by the mining activity
The economy of Junín expanded in 7.9%, explained due to the contribution of the mining activity reflected in the high extraction of copper, molybdenum and silver registered in the Mine Chinalco Peru associated to the statistic effect. In addition, it outstood the Construction sector, before the greater private investment; as well as the execution of public projects. In the case of the National Government, in educational infrastructure in the provinces of Junín, Concepción, Chupaca and Tarma; linked to the creation of sport and recreational service in the Universidad Nacional Autónoma Altoandina of Tarma of the del district of Acobamba. In the Regional Government with the works of the educational institutions “Politécnico Regional del Centro” and “Andrés Avelino Cáceres Dorregaray”, placed in the provinces of Huancayo and Satipo, respectively; and infrastructure of transportation. In the Agriculture sector grew the agriculture subsector due to the increase of the crops of starchy maize, cacao, barley grains and garlic, mainly.
Growth of the Agricultural sector favored the economy’s development of Lambayeque in 7.0%
During the third quarter of 2024, the productive activity of Lambayeque increased in 7.0%, accumulating favorable results for three periods in a row. The positive evolution was determined by the Agriculture sector before the expansion of agriculture subsector, explained by the greater production of blueberries, being second producer at national level of this crop oriented to the foreign and agro-industry market. Likewise, coffee, hard yellow corn and onion mainly increased.
The positive behavior of Transportation sector was due to the transportation services of passengers and cargo through roadways, associated to the transfer of passengers during the activities of National Festivities and the Festivity of La Cruz de Motupe; in addition, the service of air transportation of passengers.


The productive performance of Loreto increased in 6.9% based in the hydrocarbon’s activity
The production of Loreto increased by 6.9% and added four periods in a row, a positive result, explained by the hydrocarbons subsector, that registered a high exploitation of raw petroleum in the company PetroTal Peru (Lot 95); added to the good performance obtained of their last drilled wells, 18H and 19H. Likewise, the Construction sector was driven by the public investment, from the side of the Local Governments in the installation of the sewerage system of rain waters in AA.HH. Bella Luz, province of Maynas; improvement of the municipal market of Indiana town, province of Maynas; as well as the road, educational and health infrastructure.


Production of Tacna increased in 5.9% influenced by the mining activity
The economy of Tacna increased in 5.9% and accumulated a growth during five periods in a row, determined by the mining activity reflected in the greater extraction of copper in the mine Toquepala of Southern Perú Copper Corporation, that was encouraged by the high laws that registered this mineral; followed by the molybdenum and silver.


Likewise, the Telecommunications sector increased the demand of the services of mobile telephony in controlled, post-paid and pre-paid consumption; as well as, fixed internet and paid television. The same trend, showed the Electricity, Gas and Water sector before the greater generation of electric energy of solar origin registered in the power station Tacna Solar; favored by the production of potable water in the company EPS Tacna S.A.


Productive activity of Lima increased in 4.7% due to the dynamism of Manufacturing sector
The production of the department of Lima increased in 4.7%, based in the recovery of the Manufacturing sector, that reported a growth in the furniture manufacture, clothing items and textiles; copper, silver and zinc refining; manufacturing of non-metallic mining products; canned production of hydrologic resources; and meat processing.


In the Construction sector influenced the greater investment of private projects related to the installation of new commercial stores, storage and service of customs and industrial logistics, Works in projects of multi-family buildings, repair and maintenance of offices, dressing rooms and stores; in addition, in public projects, outstanding the service of protection before floods of the Quebrada Huaycoloro of the district of San Antonio, province Huarochirí.


And Commerce sector outstood the wholesale of the sector of other type of machinery and equipment, mainly heavy-duty machinery; electric, medical and transportation equipment. Likewise, the wholesale of other household goods, such as electronic devices of the brown line, pharmaceutical and medicine products, contributed.

Positive result of the economy in Piura was driven by the Manufacturing sector
During the third quarter of 2024, the production of Piura increased in 2.8%, based in the increase of the Manufacturing sector where it outstood the industries related to oil refining, manufacturing of non-metallic mineral products, preparation of sugar, meat processing; as well as the industries of milling, noodles, bakery and others; In addition it influenced the Transportation sector, due to the road transportation of passengers, associated to the transportation of visitors by the season of whale watching in Máncora; linked to the of load transportation by road, maritime and air.


On the other hand, the Mining and Hydrocarbons sector reduced justified by the hydrocarbons sector, before the reduced exploitation of crude oil and natural gas; meanwhile, the mining subsector grew due to the greater extraction of gold.


The productive activity in Ica increased in 2.6% driven by the physical progress of works
The production of Ica grew in 2.6% driven by the Construction sector, determined by the physical progress of works at Regional Government level, with the improvement of the hydric system of the Grande River basin, and vehicular infrastructure. At National Government level, by works on roads of the district of Los Aquijes, province of Ica. Local Governments also worked in the improvement of the system of potable water and sewerage, and pedestrian and vehicular infrastructure. The Fishing sector registered a greater landing of specie for direct human consumption of the frozen sector in the Tambo de Mora and Pisco ports.


Nevertheless, the mining activity was affected by the lower extraction of copper according to the informed by the mines Marcobre, Shouxin Perú and Nexa Resources Perú, and iron due to the decrease in the production of Shougang Hierro Perú and Mine Shouxin Perú. Likewise, the extraction of silver and gold reduced.


Economy of Ancash grew in 2.5% driven by the mining activity
The INEI informed that the productive activity of Ancash increased in 2.5% due to the mining subsector, reflected in the greater extraction of molybdenum and copper obtained in the Mining Company Antamina; followed by silver. In the Transportation sector outstood the dynamism of the service of road transportation of passengers and load; linked to the restart of commercial flights in the route Lima – Áncash (Airline Latam). In addition, the Electricity, Gas and Water sector increased driven by the electric energy generation in the hydraulic power station Cañón del Pato and in the thermic Power station San Jacinto.


And the positive behavior of the Agricultural sector was registered due to the growth of the crops of sugar cane, hard yellow corn, asparagus and avocado; added to the livestock production of beef cattle, fresh milk and ovine.


Construction sector boosted the production of Arequipa in 1.7%
The productive activity of Arequipa increased in 1.7%, was boosted by the dynamism of the Construction sector, associated to the greater investment in the three areas of the government, by the side of National Government with the works of services of potable water and sewerage in the provinces of Caravelí and Arequipa; the Regional Government in the road infrastructure in the provinces of Islay, La Unión and Arequipa; and the Local Governments with the works of urban road of the population center Pedregal, province of Caylloma. Likewise, in the Transportation sector increased the transportation service by road of passengers and cargo, influenced by the celebration of the 484 anniversary of Arequipa; with the contribution of the service of air transportation of passengers and cargo.
Productive activity in Moquegua decreased in 4.0% due to the reduction of the electricity subsector
The economy in Moquegua contracted in 4.0%, affected by the negative result of the electricity subsector, explained by the low generation of electric energy in the thermic power stations of Nepi and Planta Ilo-Reserva Fría. In the mining activity decreased the extraction of copper in the mine Quellaveco, as a consequence of the lower laws of the mineral. The same behavior registered the Construction sector by decreasing the investment of the National Government in works of basic services of potable water and sewerage in the population center of Yacango, province of Mariscal Nieto; in addition, in education infrastructure in the National University of Moquegua.


PRODUCTION BY GEOGRAPHIC ZONES
According to geographic zones, the INEI informed that the growth of the national economy was driven by the positive behavior of the Center (4.5%), Orient (3.7%), North (3.0%) and South (1,8%) zones.
