Arrival of foreigners to Peru increased 18.2% during the third quarter of 2024

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that according to the information provided by the National Superintendency of migrations, during the third quarter of 2024, the arrival of foreigners to Peru totalized 1 million 110 thousand 086 persons, a higher figure in 18.2% compared to the same period of 2023. From the total of foreigners that arrived to the country, 51.8% were men (574,633) and 48.2% were women (535,453).
International arrivals of foreigners are continuing growing steadily during the last quarters, nevertheless, has not yet reached the levels of 2019. Therefore, during the third quarter of 2024 is observed a decrease of 19.9% compared to the registered during the same quarter of the year 2019 (pre-pandemic of COVID-19).
Chile was the main country of origin of foreigners that arrive to Peru
In the technical report Peru: Evolution of international arrivals and departures, it is stated that Chile is the main country of origin of foreigners that arrive the country, by concentrating the 34.2%; followed by United States with 13.0%, Ecuador 11.1%, Colombia 7.4%, Bolivia 6.5%, España 6.2% and Brazil 5.5%. It is worth to mention that of these seven countries that concentrate the 83.9% of the total of movements of international arrivals of foreigners to Peru.
55 out of 100 foreigners that arrived in the country are between 30 and 59 years of age
According to group of age, 55.7% of foreigners that arrived to Peru are between 30 to 59 years of age, 19.6% of young population of 15 to 29 years of age, 16.7% were older adults over 60 years of age and older, and those that are under 15 years of age that arrived the country represented the 7.9%.
Jorge Chávez International Airport is the main checkpoint of arrival of foreigners
During the third quarter of 2024, the number of arrival of foreigners to the country through the Immigration Check Posts of Jorge Chavez International Airport reached 631,359, a higher figure in 25.6% compared to the same period of 2023. Meanwhile, the arrivals of foreigners through Santa Rosa Check Post in the boarder with Chile reached 288,577, which meant an increase of 0.3% compared to the third quarter of 2023.
Departures of foreigners from the country increased 19.2%
During the period under analysis, the number of departures of foreigners from the country reached 1 128,860, a higher figure in 19.2% compared to the third quarter of 2023. From the total of foreigners that departed from Peru, 51.6% were men and 48.4% were women.
Departures of Peruvians abroad grew 6.1%
During the third quarter of 2024, the number of departures of Peruvians abroad reached 1 012,883, a figure that meant an increase of 6.1% compared to the same period of the last year. According to sex, 50.3% of Peruvians that departed from the country were men and 49.7% were women.
61 out of 100 Peruvians that departed abroad are between 30 to 59 years of age
According to age group, 60.8% of Peruvians that traveled abroad were between 30 to 59 years of age, 19.3% were young people between 15 to 29 years of age, 14.1% represented older adults between 60 years of age and older and 5.7% were under 15 years of age.
51.9% of departures of Peruvians abroad were performed through Jorge Chavez International Airport
During the third quarter of the current year, 51.9% of the departures of Peruvians abroad were performed through the Immigration Check Posts of Jorge Chavez International Airport; and 31.9% through the Check Post of Santa Rosa in Tacna. It is worth to mention that both check posts concentrated the 83.8% of the international departures of Peruvians.
Migratory balance of Peruvians was negative in -53 535 persons
The migratory balance is the difference between the international arrivals and departures of Peruvians, during the third quarter of 2024 the balance was negative in -53,535 persons; it means, it departed from the country a greater number of Peruvians compared to those that returned. So far this year 2024, from January to September, it is observed a negative balance of -136,032 persons.
Total migratory flow in Peru grew 12.7%
During the quarter under analysis, the total migratory flow of international arrivals and departures of Peruvians and foreigners totalized 4,211 movements, a result that reflected an increase of 17.1% compared to the third quarter of 2023. This result is based, mainly, in the increase of international arrivals to Peru (12.7%) and departures abroad (12.6%).
The migratory flow is being growing steadily over the last three years, nevertheless, it still does not reach the Pre-Pandemic of COVID-19 levels. Therefore, during the third quarter of 2024 it was observed a decrease of 12.4% compared to the registered in the same quarter of the year 2019.
