Consumer prices of Lima Metropolitan area decreased 0.24% in September of 2024

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that during the month of September of 2024, the Consumer Price Index of Lima Metropolitan area reduced 0.24%, reaching an accumulated variation to the nineth month of the year of 1.86% and the annualized (October 2023 -September 2024) of 1.78%.
In the technical report, Variation of the Price Indicators of the Economy is stated that the monthly result is based mainly, by the reduction of prices observed in the consumption divisions of: Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.97%) and Transportation (-0.40%); and in lower measure the Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics (-0.03%).
On the other hand, rising prices were observed in Goods and Different Services (0.18%), Restaurants and Hotels (0.16%), Furniture, Articles for the Household and Routine Household Maintenance (0.11%), Recreation and Culture (0.04%), Accommodation, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (0.03%), Clothing Items and Footwear (0.02%), Health (0.02%) and Communications (0.01%). Meanwhile, the division of Education did not register variation.
The decrease of prices in Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages is based in the reduction observed in the vegetables, legumes including potatoes and other tubers (-3.7%), such as, whole garlic (-26.4%), corn (-21.8%), leek (-11.1%), onion head (-10.5%), celery (-9.0%), carrot (-8.7%), green beans (-7.2%), lettuce (-7.1%), yellow sweet-potato (-7.0%), tomato (-6.1%), yellow potato (-3.8%) and green peas (-2.1%). In addition, milk, cheese and eggs (-3.0%) by lower prices of chicken eggs (-9.7%).
Likewise, the prices of fruits decreased (-2.3%) such as mango (-20.7%), blueberries (-12.1%), strawberry (-10.0%), table orange (-3.6%), sweet granadilla (-3.5%), pineapple (-2.2%), juice orange (-2.2%), mandarin (-2.1%), papaya (-1.6%) and banana silk (-1.1%); other food products (-0,5%) such as albahaca (-5.9%), coriander (-3.0%), ground garlic (-2.6%), pasta and tomato sauce (-1.6%). Likewise, the prices of bread and cereals decreased (-0.2%), such as dried corn (-9.3%), purple corn (-3.1%), Moron wheat (-2.0%), dried pasta of short past (-1.9%) and long pasta (-0.4%), and pre-cooked white corn flour (-1.8%).
Meanwhile, the increase of prices of meat (1.2%), such as eviscerated chicken (0.2%), mainly, in tamales (0.6%), sandwiches (0.3%), chicken soup (0.3%), breakfast in restaurants (0.2%), Chaufa rice (0.2%), grilled chicken (0.2%), pizzas (0.2%), menu in restaurants (0.1%) and pollo a la brasa (grilled chicken) (0.1%). In addition, rising prices were also registered in the beverage service in restaurants and similar facilities (0.1%), such as hot beverages (0,3%), blended fruit juice (0.2%) and served beer (0.1%).
In the division Goods and Different Services increased their prices in hairdressing salons and establishments of personal care (0.4%), such as hair dyes (0.6%), haircut for man and woman (0.4%). Likewise, other devices, articles and products for the personnel attention (0,2%) such as face cream (0.8%), cosmetics (0.4%), toilet paper (0.3%) and cologne for women (0.2%).
Products that decreased their price in greater proportion
During the month of September of 2024, from the 586 products that compose the family basket, 250 increased their price, 156 decreased and 180 kept their prices. The products with decreasing prices were whole garlic (-26.42%), corn (-21.82%), mango (-20.72%), blueberries (-12.08%), leek (-11.14%), onion (-10.46%), strawberry (-9.98%) and chicken eggs (-9.74%).
On the other hand, the products that increased their Price were: horse mackerel (15.09%), mackerel (12.13%), white potato (10.03%), passion fruit (8.20%), cantaloupe (7.94%), avocado (6.54%), common apple (5.29%) and Israel apple (5.01%).
Products that contributed in the monthly variation
The variation of consumer prices during the month under analysis was influenced, mainly, by the lower prices in some foods such as chicken eggs, whole garlic, corn, mango and onion, that together contributed with -0.257 percentage points to the result of the month. These declines were partially attenuated by the increase of prices in white potato, eviscerated chicken, horse mackerel, avocado and menu in restaurant.
Consumer prices without foods and energy did not show variation
In September of 2024, the variation of the of the Consumer Price Index in Lima Metropolitan area, without considering foods and energy (underlying inflation) did not showed variation of prices.
Consumer prices at national level decreased 0.12%
During the month of September of 2024, the Consumer Price Index at National Level registered a reduction of 0.12%, explained by the low prices in the divisions of Foods and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (-0.58%), Transportation (-0.30%) and Communications (-0.02%). On the other hand, an increase of Price in the divisions of Restaurants and Hotels was observed (0.19%), Goods and Different Services (0.15%), Furniture, Articles for the Household (0.09%), Health (0.08%), Recreation and Culture (0.08%), Accommodation, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (0.07%), Clothing Items and Footwear (0.04%), Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (0.03%) and Education (0.01%).
Variation of prices by cities
During September of 2024, from the 26 cities where the Consumer Price Index is calculated 16 registered increases of prices. The highest variations were observed in the cities of Tarapoto (0.59%), Abancay (0.50%), Chimbote (0.34%), Cerro de Pasco (0.34%) and Cusco (0.31%). Meanwhile, the cities of Tacna (-0.41%), Ica (-0.36%) and Moquegua (-0.32%) showed the greater drops.
Wholesale prices at national level decreased 0.39%
During the month of September of 2024, the Wholesale Price Index decreased 0.39% due to the lower prices that registered the national products: manufacturing (industrial oil, Diesel oil, gasohol, sugar: brown and white, long pasta, industrial wheat flour, refined soy oil, cables of general use, King Kong brick, laundry soap and construction rods); agriculture (onion, garlic, sweet potato, tomato, green peas, carrot, lemon, sweet corn, starchy maize and banana); nevertheless, the prices of livestock assets (live chicken and beef cattle); beef cattle); and fishing (horse mackerel, pejerrey, cachema, mackerel and Bonito fish).
In the case of the imported goods, decreased the prices of manufacturing (fertilizers: phosphatic and nitrogenous, Diesel oil, mobile cellphone, soybean cakes, cyanide, resins PVC, steel sheets and carbon black); and agricultural (Cotton not carded, hard yellow corn and wheat).
Prices of machinery and equipment grew 1.00%
During the month under analysis, the Price Index of Machinery and Equipment increased 1.00%, due to the high prices of the capital goods of imported origin, such as machinery and equipment for transportation (road tractor for semi-trailer, vehicles for freight transport and motors for vessels), machinery for industry (forklifts, desktop computers and dumper truck), machinery for agriculture (shovel and tractors) and other machinery and equipment (electricity meters: single phase and different).
Likewise, the prices of national capital goods, such as, machinery for transportation (moto-taxi, car body and springs for automotive vehicle), machinery for industry (fans, transformers and electric boards) and other machinery and equipment (nets for a catch); nevertheless, agricultural machinery kept with no variation.
Prices of construction materials reduced 0.08%
During September of 2024, the Price Index of Construction Materials of Lima Metropolitan area decreased 0.08% due to the lower prices registered in six of the ten groups that are part of this indicator: bricks (King Kong, Pandereta and for roof); electric supplies (cables for energy); tiles and mosaics (wall coating and for floor); tubes and accessories of plastic (PVC tubes: electricity and water; and PVC accessories for water and sewerage); aggregates (stone and sand) and concrete structures (corrugated plates of fibber).
On the other hand; it was observed rising prices in glasses (tempered glass); woods; (oak tree, plywood and Tornillo woo; metallic (black wire, nails, steel sheets and construction rods) and binders (Portland cement type I).
