Older adult population that uses the Internet increases by 47.0%

According to the results of the National Households Survey (ENAHO) of the second quarter of the year 2024, 47.0% of the population of 60 years of age and older used the Internet, increasing in 6.2 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the year 2023 (40.8%). This was informed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report Situation of Older Adult Population.
According to residence area, the greater proportion of older adult persons that access to this service reached 56.8% among the residents of the urban area, and reached 14.6% among the residents of rural area.
Of the total households of the country, 27.8% have as chief of the household a person of 60 years of age and older
The ENAHO results informed that the total of households of the country, 27.8% has as female or male head of the household a person of 60 years of age and older, which meant an increase of 0.9 percentage point compared to the second quarter of 2023 (26.9%).
In the rural area, this percentage reached 32.9%, and in the urban area this percentage reached 26.5%, with growths of 2.5 and 0.5 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the year 2023.
50.6% of the older adult population actively participates in the labor market
The results of the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN) revealed that during the quarter April-May-June 2024, 50.6% of older adults actively participate in the labor market, whether in condition of employed or actively seeking employment.
According to age groups, it outstood the participation of population of 60 to 69 years of age (68.3%). In lower proportion was the population of 70 years of age and older (32.0%).
23.5% of the heads of household of 60 years of age and older were benefited by the Program Pension 65
During the quarter under study, 23.5% of the older adult chiefs of the household declared being benefitted of the Program Pension 65, a figure higher in 4.9 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the year 2023 (18.6%).
37.1% of the older adult population with some health problem sought medical attention for their disease
During the quarter April-May-June of 2024, the older adult with some health problem sought medical attention reached 37.1%. According to place or establishment of consultation, 12.2% went to establishments of Ministry of Health (MINSA), 9.7% sought medical attention in pharmacy or apothecary, 7.5% in establishments of Social Health Insurance (EsSalud) and 5.3% was a private practice, among others.
Affiliation to some health insurance grew from 90.6% to 93,3% in the older adult population of the country
The INEI informed that the total of olde adult population of 60 years of age and older, 93.3% has some health insurance, being public or private. This coverage is higher in 2.7 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the year 2023 (90.6%). Likewise, it outstood the increase of the coverage of some health insurance of the older adult population that lives in Lima Metropolitan area and in the rural area, in 3.8 and 2.4 percentage points, respectively.
During the quarter under analysis, 52.8% of the population of 60 years of age and older of the country only accessed to the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS), it means, 4.5 percentage points more than in the same quarter of the last year (48.3%). Meanwhile, 35.0% of the older adults had only access to EsSalud, registered a decrease of 1.6 percentage points compared to the second quarter of the year 2023 (36.6%).
In addition, the access to the SIS showed an increase in all residence areas. Moreover, the access to the SIS showed an increase in all residence areas. Outstood Lima Metropolitan area, where it went from 27.4% to 36.1% (8.7 percentage points more), followed by the rest of urban area, from 46.6% to 49.3% (2.7 percentage points) and in the rural area from 83.0% to 84.6% (1.6 percentage points).
From the total of the population that had some disability, 45.9% are older adult persons
During the quarter under analysis, from the total of the population that had some disability, 45.9% are older adults of 60 years of age and older.
By residence area, the proportion of older adult population with some disability is greater in the rural area (48.3%) than in the urban area (45.3%). By groups of age, among the older adults that have some disability, 16.4% are between 60 to 70 years of age and 29.5% of 71 years of age and older.
42.6% of the households of the country have as a member of the family at least one older adult person
According to the ENAHO results of the second quarter of the year 2024, 42.6% of the households of the country have among their members of at least one person of 60 years of age and older.
In that regard, the greater proportion of households with the population of 60 years of age and older placed in the rural area (47.2%), followed by Lima Metropolitan area (45.8%) and the urban rest (38.4%).
