Peru registered 146 cases of femicide in the year 2023

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed that in the year 2023 registered 146 cases of femicide in Peru. During the period between 2015 and 2023 were registered 1,191 cases, being the greater number of cases in the year 2018, with 150 victims.
Likewise, it was informed that in the year 2023, in Lima Metropolitan area took place 11 cases of femicides lower than in the year 2022. Nevertheless, in Junín increased the cases in 12, and in Arequipa increased in 9 cases compared to the last year.
In the document “Perú: Femicide and Violence against Woman, 2015 - 2023”, it also stated that the femicide rate for every 100 thousand women, kept in 0.9 during the year 2023. The highest rates of femicides were registered in the departments of Huancavelica (2.9), Arequipa (2.5), Junín (2.3), Huánuco (2.2) and Pasco (1.5).
Femicide is understood as the death of women by their condition of women, within the context of family violence, sexual coercion or victimization, abuse of power, confidence or any other position or relation that confers authority to the aggressor and in all forms of discrimination against women, regardless of there being or has been a conjugal relationship or of co-habitant with the aggressor.
It has been registered 1,191 cases of femicide between 2015 and 2023
In accumulated figures, between the year 2015 and the year 2023, were registered 1,191 cases of femicide at national level and 26 provinces totalized 617 cases of femicides, representing the 51.8% of the total.
The greater amounts of femicides happened in the province of Lima Metropolitan area, with 283 cases.
Of each 100 victims of femicide, 4 were of foreign nationality
According to the nationality of the victims of femicide, during the year 2023, 95.7% were Peruvians, meanwhile the victims of femicide of foreign nationality represented 4.3% of the total.
24.7% of femicides were caused with blade weapons
During the year 2023, 24.7% of femicides was caused with blade weapons, 22.6% by strangulation, by choking or by drowning; 14.4% by firearm; 10.3% by blunt object; 3.4% by supply of toxic substances; 2.7% by precipitation or fall; 2.1% direct action of fire; other means 10.3%; and not specified 9.6%.
Jealousy and family violence were the main causes of femicide
The four main causes of femicide in 2023 were: jealousy (50.5%), family violence (10.3%), refusal of the victim to return to their abusive partner (7.2%) and sexual abuse (6.2%), that together make 74.2% of the total. 50.0% of the femicides of the year 2023 occurred inside the household of the victim and 16.4% in the public road.
65.8% of the femicide cases were committed by couple or ex-couple
Regarding the family relationship of the victim, in the year 2023, in 29.5% of the cases was the partner or live-in partner of the aggressor; 11.0% the ex-partner or live-in partner, 9.6% the boyfriend, 8.2% the husband, 6.8% the ex-boyfriend and 0.7% the ex-husband; among the main ones.
Peru ranks in sixth place in Latin-America in cases of femicide
At Latin-America level, in the year 2023, Brazil registered the greater number of cases of femicide (1,706), followed by Mexico (827) and Colombia (525). Peru is placed in the sixth place with 146 cases. Nevertheless, Honduras registers the greater rate of femicides in Latin-America: of every 100,000 women, 7.4 were killed by its condition of women. In this indicator, Peru registers a rate of 0.9, as well as Uruguay, ranking 10th.
56.3% of the prison population imprisoned by the offence of femicide are between 18 to 39 years of age
During the year 2023, the prison population imprisoned by the offence of femicide totalized 835, an increase of 80 compared to the figures of the year 2022. Likewise, 56.3% are between 18 and 39 years of age, 37.6% are between 40 and 59 years of age and 6.0% are or is over 60 years of age.
Regarding the legal status of the prison population imprisoned by the offence of femicide, 38.2% (319) are in condition of processed and 61.8% of the rest of the prison population (516) had been sentenced.
