Thursday 22 November, the Embassy of Peru in Thailand participated in a special ceremony to celebrate “Loy Kratong”, one of the most important traditional festivals of the country, in which, during the full moon night in the last month of the Thai lunar calendar, people thank the goddess of the water (Phra Mae Khongkha), placing floating lamps (Krathongs) in a river. On this occasion, 13 countries were invited to participate, among them Peru, the only representative from Latin America.

The ceremony, organized on the Chao Phraya riverbank at the recently inaugurated shopping mall “ICONSIAM” in Bangkok, was presided by the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and executives of the Siam Piwat Group, owner of ICONSIAM. Ambassadors of the 13 participated countries were presented, as well as cultural, art, and sport personalities and the general public.

Each of the 13 countries offered a "krathong", specially made for the occasion, with a theme or motif inspired by their culture. In the case of Peru, the krathong reproduces to scale a totora reed boat from Lake Titicaca, placed on a pedestal. The krathong is accompanied by a brief explanatory text that alludes to the millenary character of these boats and the centrality of Lake Titicaca in Inca mythology. The exhibition will remain open until the end of the year and it is estimated that it will be visited by more than one million people.
