The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Ambassador Jaime Pomareda, signed on 31st July 2019 the Instrument of Accession of Peru to the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), in a ceremony held within the framework of the 52nd Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of ASEAN, in Bangkok, Thailand.

The subscription ceremony was chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, country that holds the presidency of ASEAN during 2019. The Foreign Ministers of the other Member States of this Southeast Asian integration mechanism also participated: Brunei, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Vietnam, who last January had already unanimously approved Peru's accession to the TAC. Likewise, other ministers and representatives of the ASEAN dialogue partners, as well as invited guests and the Secretary General of ASEAN, witnessed this act.

After signing the Instrument of Accession, which makes Peru the 38th contracting party to the Treaty, the Peruvian Deputy Minister sent a message highlighting that one of Peru's foreign policy objectives is to strengthen ties with Asia in general, in which context Peru acceded to APEC, and with Southeast Asia in particular, through the signing of this treaty, amongst other actions.

Accession to the TAC, a fundamental instrument for the relations between ASEAN members and their external partners, is a very important step that Peru has taken since it will facilitate cooperation with ASEAN to boost economic and commercial relations, investment and cooperation in science and technology, including environmental protection, natural disaster management and the fight against climate change, in addition to promoting tourism connectivity and academic and student exchange.
