PHOTO EXHIBITION: "Shipibo-Konibo. Portraits of my blood", by David Díaz

Second art exhibit at the Embassy of Peru's Art Gallery 2023 season

"Shipibo-Konibo. Portraits of my blood", by David Díaz
The Embassy of Peru in the United States of America is delighted to invite you to visit the exhibition "Shipibo-Konibo. Portraits of my blood" by the renowned Peruvian photographer David Díaz. This traveling exhibition, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru, was the winner of the Luces 2022 Award for the best photography and video exhibition.

The artist was born in Nuevo Saposoa, Ucayali. Regarding his work, he shares, "The Shipibo-Konibo people have a dynamic culture that is going through a moment of transition, and there will be many things that will not be the same in the coming years. That's why I feel that now is the time and it's my responsibility to document these changes and express them through photography. It's my tool for preserving the memory of my people."

"Shipibo-Konibo. Portraits of my blood" is a careful immersion into the intimacy of his ancestral community. Díaz portrays scenes not as indigenous propaganda, but as historical documents. It is a remarkable journey where traditional subjects, modern subjectivity, and the enchantment of nature find a genuinely friendly relationship in the face of the inevitable Western gaze. The artist is attentive to his historical context and ethnic identity.

The exhibition will be open to the public from June 28th to September 1st, 2023, during the following hours (no appointment necessary):

Monday to Friday: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
