General information about Lima

If you are coming to Lima to attend the VII Ministerial Summit on Government and Digital Transformation of the Americas, the following information will be useful for you to have a good stay.

Climate of Lima: It is predominantly humid. Generally, it is above 80% humidity. The average temperature during November is from 15 to 22°C.

Time zone: Eastern Standard Time (GMT - 5).

Electrical voltage: The electrical supply in Peru is 220 volts and 60 Hz. The outlets are mainly for plugs with two flat tips or two round tips. Most four and five star hotels offer a 110 volt power supply for shavers.

Water: It is not recommended to drink tap water in Lima. Instead, bottled water or boiled water is safe and available everywhere. As for ice cubes served in drinks, it is advisable to consume them in safe places.

Tips: The service charge is included in most restaurants and hotels. However, it is always appreciated to round up tickets or invoices up to 10%.

Smoking area: Smoking is prohibited in public places as it is harmful to health.

International calls: Long distance calls can be made from hotel rooms and international pay phones. Also, prepaid phone cards may be available at the hotel reception. Please note that all charges for personal phone calls made from hotel rooms must be paid by users.

Debit and credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club and other debit and credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and stores. However, some restaurants and small shops only accept cash payments.

Local currency and ATMs: The Peruvian currency is the Sol (S/ or PEN) and can be found in the following denominations: 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents and 50 cents, 1 sol, 2 soles and 5 soles. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 soles. Foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks, exchange houses, shopping malls and hotels. Beware of exchanging money with "street money changers". Dollars are widely exchanged. These can also be used directly as a means of payment in many establishments: 1 US$ is equivalent to approximately 3 soles and 95 cents. You can find ATMs in pharmacies, drugstores, supermarkets and shopping malls.
