INEI receives the OECD delegation for the review of the official statistics of Peru

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) started the Review of the Official Statistics of Peru, with the objective of evaluating and improving the statistical practices of the country, that currently are in application process to become an OECD member. This activity is carried out in the city of Lima and will extend till Friday 24, November of this current year.
 
It is important to point out that the INEI in its quality of governing body of the National Statistical System (SEN) plays a central role in the coordination and monitoring of the official statistics in Peru. In cooperation with the entities that make up the SEN and endeavor to build a robust statistical infrastructure and aligned with the international standards.
 
The OECD Evaluation Commission conformed by Mrs. Asa Johansson, Deputy Director of the OECD Statistical and Data Direction, and Mr. Julien Dupont, Head of Unit and Coordinator of the Accession Process. The OECD Evaluation Commission started its activities in the event performed in hybrid format (face-to-face and virtual), that included the participation of the Chief the INEI, Mr. Dante Carhuavilca Bonett, SEN Representatives, international organisms and representatives of the System of United Nations in Peru.
 
During their speech, the Chief of the INEI declared that the visit of the OCDE delegation is an excellent opportunity to check the state the official statistics of the country; in addition, it must become a turning point to strengthen and implement the best international practices. For this reason, this visit is particularly relevant for the INEI and the SEN.
 
The delegation will evaluate the national statistical production
The review will focus in fifteen specific subjects, such as, the legal and institutional framework of the official statistics, statistical infrastructure, national accounts, progresses of the change on Base Year of national accounts, employment, economic statistics at short term, Price indicators, distribution of the income and wealth, well-being, environment, among others; looking to determine in which measure the statistical production fulfills with the OECD standards and requirements.
 
In addition, it will evaluate the degree of alignment of the current statistic legislation to the main fundamental principles established in the Recommendations of the OECD Committee about the Good Statistical Practices, a legal framework governing the production of official data in the organization and which Peru is part of since August 2017.
 
The OECD delegation will analyze the coherence of the SEN statistical production, in terms of coverage, quality, opportunity and comparability, providing a critical evaluation that will be essential to the entry into Peru to the mentioned international organism.
 
SEN members will participate in working tables with the delegation
Over the five days of evaluation, the delegation will have an active participation of the SEN main data producer entities that will be very important for the success of the review, taking in account that the improvement of the official statistic production not only will strength the decision- making at national level, but also will contribute to encourage foreign investment and to the economic development of the country.

The OECD, within the framework of the process of accession of Peru, underlines the importance of this review as an essential step towards the consolidation of our country as full member of the organization. The active engagement of the SEN members will reflect the strong purpose of the country to reach high international standards in statistical mater.
