INEI will monitor health, education and living conditions of the childhood and adolescence indicators with new digital platform

With the aim of facilitating the monitoring of the following indicators: health, education, nutrition, access of basic services and living conditions of the population under 18 years old, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) presented in the city of Iquitos, region Loreto, the Platform of Indicators of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) OF Childhood and Adolescence, a digital tool that will allow integral monitoring the situation of the childhood and adolescence in the country.

This initiative, developed within the framework of the joint work with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), represents a significative progress in the generation and dissemination of specialized statistical information, oriented to strengthen the decision making and the design of public policies in favor of the childhood and adolescence.

During the presentation, the chief of the INEI, Dr. Gaspar Morán Flores, stated that this tool will allow to have key evidence to better targeting interventions of the State. “This platform constitutes a fundamental instrument to visualize the situation of the childhood and adolescence in the country, as well as to identify the gaps and to orient more effective strategies, based in reliable, timely and disaggregated information”, noted.

In regions such as Loreto, where 39.3% of the population is under 18 years old, the information presented allows to identify important gaps in health, education and access to basic services. In 2024, 60.8% of children live in households with unsatisfied basic needs basic, the highest levels of the country.

In addition to this, just 34.8% of the households with children and adolescents’ access to basic services and less than 40% has sewage system. In health, 50.8% of children of 6 to 59 months had anemia, meanwhile that in education just the 67.2% of adolescents finish the secondary education level, below the national average.

At the same time, Javier Álvarez, Representative of the UNICEF in Peru, pointed out: “The results show a complex reality: there are progresses in health, education and access to services, but also gaps that affect with higher intensity to the childhood in the Amazon region. This requires differentiated responses, with territorial approach, intercultural and of equity, that allow to expand opportunity and guarantee the exercise of rights of childhood and adolescence”.

Within the context, the platform and the system of tracking of the SDGs related to the childhood and adolescence allow to have more precise information to guide investment decisions and prioritize interventions in the territories. Among its main characteristics, they offer historic series of information of the last ten years, with updated data as of 2024 and the possibility of disaggregate the results at national, regional level, and according to socio-demographic variables, such as sex, age group, education level and native language.

Of the 126 indicators that are part of the platform, 88% is built based in the surveys executed by the INEI, such as the National Household Survey (ENAHO), the Demographic and Family Health Survey la (ENDES), the National Survey of Budgetary Programs (ENAPRES), the National Survey on Social Relations (ENARES) and the National Survey of Use of Time (ENUT), among others.

The remaining 12% of indicators on childhood and adolescence is prepared based in the administrative records of the Ministry of Education (MINEDU) and the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI).

In addition, the platform incorporates interactive tools that makes easy the data visualization through graphics and tables, as well as the downloading of information in accessible formats, guaranteeing the public access to reliable and timely statistics.

With this initiative, the INEI reaffirms its commitment with the production of a quality, timely and disaggregated statistical information, that allows to visibility the reality of the childhood and contribute to the sustainable development of the country, under the principle of that no girl, boy and adolescent is left behind.
