INEI visited more than a half million of households with the Permanent Survey of National Employment

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) visited a total of 547,536 households and interviewed 1 204 433 persons during the five years that has been running the Permanent Survey of National Employment (EPEN), research that have become an in the main source of the specialized information about the Peruvian labour market.
The EPEN is a continuous statistical activity that allows to provide monthly information of monitoring of the labour market through the indicators of employment, unemployment and others regarding the availability and use of human resources at national level.
This survey started its field operations in March 29 of 2021 and has personnel duly trained that completes the questionnaires performed in direct interviews in the selected households, through mobile devices (digital tablet).
Serves as employment matrix and the calculation of the base year
Likewise, the information collected serves to the preparation of the employment matrix and the calculation of the base year of the National Accounts, and is used by different entities of the State, such as the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (MTPE) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), for the decision-making in matter of public policies. Likewise, it represents a relevant source for international organisms, researchers and public in general.
Its design allows to generate and publish information on the situation of the employment, unemployment, labor informality, among other key variables, on a monthly basis for Lima Metropolitan area and Callao (by mobile quarter), quarterly information for the cities and on an annual basis for departmental, urban and rural levels.
Indicators of great importance for decision-making
Through the EPEN, it can get indicators on occupancy rate, activity rate, rate of salaried employees, rate of personnel properly employed, rate of underemployment, rates of informal employment, main income (current Soles), unemployment rate and inactive employees’ rate.
Publications and data base of the EPEN are available in the institutional web page of the INEI (https://www.gob.pe/inei/), through monthly, quarterly and annual technical reports, as well as in the platform of microdata, according to the established dissemination calendar.
Nowadays, the EPEN has a human equipment highly specialized, comprised of professionals in the areas of field operation, cartographic updating and registration of households, generation of indicators, data consistency, methodology, training, sampling and quality control, monitoring, route schedules, national supervision and administrative area, as well as support personnel in security.
