OECD representatives arrived in Peru to assess the INEI’s statistical production and the National Statistical System

In order to consolidate the efforts to modernize the National Statistical System (SEN) and to move forward in the process of adhesion of the country to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) receives from October 27th to October 31st a mission of representatives of the mentioned international organism to perform the OECD Peer Review on Official Statistics of Peru.


The peer review is part of the second stage of the process of statistical assess of the country within the framework of its OECD incorporation; and at the same time, it contributed with the strengthen of the official statistics, as well as the sustainable development and the insertion of Peru in the international standards of statistical governance.


It is important to state that the INEI, in its quality of governing body of the National Statistics System (SEN), plays a key role in the coordination and supervision of the official statistics in Peru. In collaboration with the entities that are part of the SEN, is endeavouring to build up a statistical infrastructure robust and aligned with the international standards.


The evaluation mission of the OECD is composed by Steve MacFeely, chief of Statistics and Director of the Statistics and Data of the OECD; Julien Dupont, chief of the Unit and Coordinator of the Adhesion Process – OECD; Alejandro Rosas, representative of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico – INEGI; Brenda Bugge, from the National Office of Statistics of Canada - Statistics Canada; and Marit Hoel, from the National Office of Statistics of Norway - Statistics Norway; participate of the meetings with the representatives of the SEN and INEI officials, where each one of the sectors presents their progresses according to the recommendations established by the OECD in the previous review.

Strengthening of the SEN statistics and upgrade
It is important to state that the review by peers represents a strategic opportunity to consolidate the efforts of modernization of the SEN and to progress in the process of adhesion of the country to the OECD. In addition, to strengthen the base of statistics that serves as input to the design of public policies based in evidence, as well as the sustainable development and the insertion of Peru in international standards and the best statistical practices.


It is worth to mention that, the active participation and cooperation between entities that are part of the SEN, as well as the private actors are important for the success of the review, since that the improve of the official statistical production contributes to the informed decision-making, promotes the foreign investment and the economic development of the country.


Mission assesses the national statistical production
The review is part of the progress in the process of Statistical Review for the Adhesion, being important the update of the statistical legislation.


In this peers’ review will be analyzed the statistical infrastructure referred to the Population and Housing Censuses; Agribusiness Census and Agricultural Statistics; Economic Census; Statistical Registration of Companies and Business Demography; Statistics of International Commerce; Household, Employment and Family Budget Surveys; and National Accounts.
