What we do?

At the Geophysical Institute of Peru we have been developing research and studies in the field of geophysics since 1922, reaching the 2nd position in the national ranking of research institutions, due to our scientific contribution in scientific articles published in specialized international journals, and studies that are reflected in technical reports that contribute to Risk Management in the country.

Geophysics arises in the world of science as a very specialized field of research for the study of the Earth, both in its interior, surface, in its exterior including space; in addition to its interaction with other planets in the solar system.

"Geophysics is the science that deals with the study of the Earth, its interior, surface, atmosphere and space by applying the physical sciences. In this way it allows you to reach the interior of the Earth and its processes on the surface, atmosphere and space, inaccessible to other fields of research. For them, it proposes physical-mathematical models to understand and monitor all the processes that the planet Earth develops in its interior, surface, atmosphere and space in order to prevent their occurrence that may affect societies".

All our research fields are grouped in the following programs:

  • Solid Earth Sciences: in charge of investigating and monitoring all geophysical processes taking place in the interior and surface of the Earth.
  • Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences: in charge of investigating all geophysical processes taking place in the Earth's atmosphere and hydrosphere.
  • Geospace Sciences and Astronomy: in charge of investigating and monitoring all geophysical processes taking place in geospace.
  • Technological Development and Geophysical Networks: in charge of technological development in geophysics and the maintenance and operation of geophysical parameter monitoring networks.

Since our country is located in a tectonically very dynamic zone, with a very complex atmospheric variability and affected by all the geospace processes, it is important to have an institution such as the IGP to lead geophysical research and monitoring in order to strengthen our social role, since we contribute to prevent and mitigate phenomena with great destructive potential.

We are celebrating 100 years (1922 - 2022) performing Science to protect ourselves, science to advance.

Vision of the sector:

"A modern country that takes sustainable advantage of its natural resources and is concerned about conserving the environment by reconciling economic development with environmental sustainability for the benefit of its citizens."

"The Geophysical Institute of Peru has a presence in the national territory and is part of the international scientific community. As a public research institution, it leads with public value the management of scientific knowledge in the geophysical field for the benefit of territorial development and Peruvian society."

Institutional mission:

"To develop scientific research, technological innovation and permanent monitoring of *geophysical phenomena for the welfare of society in an efficient and effective manner."
